thumbs up!

I'm a Joni Mitchell newbie, and my friends tell me that I would eat up "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" and "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter", however, I've been really putting "Hejira" on heavy rotation instead, even though I'm sure I would get around those albums eventually.

Listening to "Hissing" though, I can't believe that Rolling Stones trashed it when it came out disbelief

Yeah Hissing and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter should be your next stops. I gotta get back to getting Hejira back in rotation though. Great album that gets so overlooked. It's a free-flowing journey, but Hissing is a dark, yet beautiful journey.

I am going to admit something that I never thought I would, Mitchell bores me to death. I have this albums (and a few others) and I add them to my Itunes playlist but inevitably I end up unselecting each tune by tune untl all songs have been removed.

I respect and love the concept of Joni much more than I appreciate her work aesthetically.

My Favorite from Joni. I have the demo of this and it just shows what an amazing painter she is with words and music. I also love Hejira. Jaco's bass is mixed right up with her voice! Basically anything from Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and before it is great!

Never really knew her before I discovered her through Prince and his music, and I´m grateful that Prince helped me discover artists like Sly Stone, Joni Mitchell and especially Carlos Santana. I was too young in their prime to really be able to appreciate their music back then.

I want to go and buy a lot more Joni Mitchell albums this spring and summer.

And I love this album, Hissing of Summer Lawns.

I would keep that to myself. Joni is such a thoughtful and poetic artist to be bored by her says much about you. Not something good to admit too I'm afraid lol.

All truly great artists challenge their listeners! That tune has some great Moog synth in it to boot!

i know, it's just so different and kind of weird. but i love it smile

i'm also trying to locate my bjork cover of "the boho dance", which is just phenomenal.

it was on the joni tribute album that prince's "a case of you" was on as well. i should've

put it in my Joni folder but i see that i haven't.

prince said in a rolling stone interview in 1985 that he loved 'the hissing of summer lawns' didn't he?

As for my favorites of Joni.it's Blue and Hejira.. Blue ofcourse has the gem 'a case of you' which is just about one of the best songs ever...Prince version ofcourse is good as well....Hissing i do not really like..just do not really get it...sorry bout that..wink

much as i love "a case of you", i think that "the last time i saw richard" is probably my favorit

joni song ever. in fact, it would end up very high on my top 10 songs of all time by anyone list.

it just doesn't get much better than that.

Ok these two are the most played songs from the album for me right now...

And I could hear SO much influence on Prince, Lisa & Wendy from Sweet Bird. The album flow so nicely.

Harle, does this mean you are going to give Wendy & Lisa's catelog a spin?

BTW: I wanna ammend my statement. It's not boring, it just doesn't reach my core like other artist do making me less interested in repeated viewing. Does that make sense?

She's kinda in the same league as Fellini's films with me. I can appreciate the mastery but it's just not forme.

"The Boho Dance" worship

That's all I have to say. I have to say that Hissing is probably my favorite Joni album. So personal yet vibrant. Love playing it in the springtime.

I know nothing about Joni Mitchell. What style of music does she fall under? 85% of my music collection is r&b/jazz/soul and 15% is pop/rock/dance. Would I like her? I've alwasy been intrigued because I hear how she's such a great lyricist, but nobody ever mentions her voice.

Harlepolis, you should check out Chaka's version of Hejira! I wasn't feeling it (and I worship Chaka) but you may love it...

Oh yeah, Chaka did a couple of renditions of Joni's songs..

And Ladies Man which I can't find in youtube, I just wish she would go ahead and record a Joni tribute album, I know she would bring it beyond the limit. BTW Chaka also cites her as a bgi influence(Frankly, I could hear it all over Ask Rufus) she also sang background for her in two songs from the Don Juan's Reckless Daughter - this was the primary reason why I wanted to check Joni's music out because I'm a serious Chakaholic.

It wasn't until last month when I watched the documentary film Woman of Heart & Mind when I really fell in love with Joni's music - Twisted from Court & Spark was the song that caught my attention, it wasn't the type of thing I expected her to do(blame it on pre-concieved ideas), it was playful & quirky,,,,,Herbie Hancock said that she is a jazz singer at heart, I didn't take his words to heart until recently.

I think you should get all of her 70s albums,,,,,,,her work with Jaco Pastorius is just untouchable. I could def see why Prince & Chaka ranted, raved and sang all tunes of praises for her.

As a teenager, I never really knew Joni Mitchell, and it was Prince and his constant mentions of Joni in his music, his interviews or his record sleeves that got me curious, so, in a way, it was Prince who introduced me to her. I see you have Erykah Badu´s quote as your sig, and you seem to like RnB and Soul. I think you would definitely like Joni Mitchell´s music. I like it, and the more research I do, the more I like her music.
