I thought Stevie Wonder was playing most of the instruments on this song. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

No he didn't play an instrument on it. Believe me I thought he did too but it turned out to be the ACTUAL FUNK BROTHERS.
That's Uriel Jones banging on the drums. Dennis Coffey, I believe, on the lead guitar and Robert White and Joe Messina on the rhythm guitar section. The horn section led by Hank Cosby I believe.
No Stevie didn't play an instrument on it. Believe me I was shocked to hear he didn't play an instrument on it.
This song was apparently inspired by Stevie & Syreeta's relationship. |

It's a shame, the way you mess around with your man It's a shame, the way you hurt me It's a shame, the way you mess around with your man I'm sitting all alone by the telephone Waiting for your call, when you don't call at all
Why do you use me, try to confuse me How can you stand to be so cruel Why don't you free me from this prison Where I serve my time as your fool
hmmmm

It could've been Syreeta's words for Stevie. You know how lyrics change. |

yeah, true
Stevie loved the babes
HELL a lot of those songs were written by Syreeta. Stevie was just gracious to air out their dirty laundry in a nice way. Kinda indicates Stevie can be a DOG sometimes. |
