Standards - Yea or nay

Perhaps this thread will help shed a little light on a genre of music that has historically done absolutely nothing for me.

If categorizing this genre of music as "standards" or "big band" or "show tunes" is off center for some - just roll with me.

In the past, whenever folks asked me about what type of music I like, I've pretty much always said I like everything except rap and country. And overall, while that pretty much still stands, (although I do like some country in moderation), I think I've come to realize there is another form of music that does even less than those for me.

The standard.

Songs like Embraceable You - I've Got You Under My Skin - On the Street Where You Live, My Way etc... they just don't resonate with me at all. While I'm sure the charts for many of these songs (compositionally speaking) are very ambitious, I almost always find the end result boring and soulless. It's like I always know where the song is going to end up no matter how the song is structured.

But rather than write off the genre, I'd love to hear some recommendations from people. Any one have anythiing in this genre they think I should check out?
