Quincy Jones, featuring Herbie Hancock, Harry Lookofsky - "Tell Me A Bedtime Story"

...

From Sounds..and Stuff Like That!

I always loved Quincy Jones' version of this Herbie Hancock tune! Herbie reprises his role on keys here, while violinist and concertmaster Harry Lookofsky transcribed Herbie's Rhodes solo and overdubbed it fifteen times with strings. As usual, Quincy has an all-star session lineup here, Including Patti Austin and Luther Vandross:

Quincy Jones, conductor, leader;

Sy Johnson - arranger;

Herbie Hancock - electric piano, clavinet;

Hubert Laws - flute;

Harry Lookofsky - violin solo (15 overdubbed violins);

Anthony Jackson - electric bass;

Steve Gadd - drums;

Ralph MacDonald - percussion;

Eric Gale - guitar;

Vocals and handclaps:

Patti Austin (concertmistress),

Luther Vandross,

Lani Groves,

Gwen Guthrie

Yolanda McCullough,

Vivian Cherry,

Tom Bahler,

Zach Sanders,

Frank Floyd

Henry Sigismonti, David Duke, Sidney Muldrow, Arthur Maebe, Audrey Bouth,-French Horns ; Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Jerome Richardson, Buddy Collette - Woodwinds; Oscar Brashear, Bill Lamb, Chuck Findley, Snooky Young - Flugelhorns; Chauncey Welsch, Jimmy Cleveland, Donald Waldrup, Bill Watrous, Robert Payne, Charles Loper - Trombones;

Arranged by Quincy Jones & Sy Johnson;

Vocal Arrangement by Tom Bahler; Rec. in NY, 1978

Nice. smile

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

biggrin Kool versions, including Herbie's original! BTW, does anybody actually remember the old Bill Cosby animated TV special that Herbie originally wrote this music for, back around '69? I saw it once as a kid, but I was so young, I thought later that I had dreamed it!! There's interesting info here:
