Non-standard Motown

These are lesser known releases on Motown Records that never appear on their endless compilations of the same songs or get radio play on oldies stations.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Huge CTI fan, and only recently I was informed(Via Brother Finess) that they were a subsidiary of Motown.

Motown also distributed KUDU Records for awhile.

nod

It still takes time for me to distinguish between the CTI & the KUDU records though. I don't know why, maybe because both labels used the same session musicians?

Thought so. So technically it's as much part of Motown's legacy as it is Grover's.

I don't think Motown today really counts CTI or KUDU as part of the label as they were not created by Berry Gordy. CTI's earlier stuff was distributed by A&M.
