Teddy Pendergrass Thread

I wanna do a thread devoted to "The Master of the Bedroom Classics", Mr. Theodore DeReese "Teddy" Pendergrass. Oh yeah, Happy Pre-B-Day to the Teddy Bear! Post pics and vids if you like.

Your "Happy Birthday" is not belated. Teddy was an Aries, born on March 26, 1950.

Breaks my heart that he spent the last half of his life in a wheelchair. Wish I had the power to heal people, but then I guess that would just lead to my haters crucifying me.

May Teddy be resting peacefully. rose

this is my favourite mr. pendergrass song...

this brings tears to my eyes... he can rock in his seat and smile, after all that happened to him, but at the same time he has such a look on his face of sadness...

LOVE me some Teddy. Arguably the most "masculinely powerful" voice ever...he was capable of delivering great tenderness & emotional depth as well.

I always respected the fact that although the accident robbed him of some of the vocal strength, he never lost his humanity nor self respect. Like MJSTUDENT noted, he sang "Joy" (amongst others) from that wheelchair...even being paralyzed didn't extinguish his fire.

TP was a beautiful guy....miss him.

A student of Junior Marvin, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke and Brook Benton, this guy definitely is up there with those cats as far as vulnerability, soul and raw edge as it could get. The first black act to have five platinum albums and the first ever act to host women's only concerts. I don't think Teddy gets his just due, partially (but not his fault) due to his car accident. He definitely could've gave Luther a run for his money had March, 1982 not happened. RIP.

I wonder why Jaheim is not getting more credit for his talent and for sounding so much like Teddy? Did he piss-off someone in the industry? Or is he gonna have to whip it out to get some attention around here?

I think that's the problem, that he sounds too much like Teddy; to the point where it almost sounds, gimmicky. I personally don't care for him, because of it. Everytime I hear one of his songs, I get the urge to say, "Come on, MAN....Just sing in your "Real" voice...

I didn't realize that, I always thought he seemed genuine, and just happened to have a singing voice like Teddy's. I'm not a big fan of Jaheim, but I always thought he was a lot more worthy than a lot of the other young male R&B singers out there. Specifically, I'd rather hear Jaheim sing than Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, or Usher. John Legend and Jaheim have the kind of maturity in their voice that I feel could sustain them through a very long career.

But my vote alone does NOT a Superstar make.

I'm not saying that he's not geniune, he seems to have a real love for music and CAN sing. I'm just saying that the fact that his sound is so much like TP, might be distracting to some. As for John Legend, he bores the ass hairs, out of me. He sounds like a black, Tony Bennet.

DOOD! i actually liked john legend (stephens) until i met him... my sister used to know him (before he was 'legend'), and said he was a nice cat. i met him after his second album as 'legend'. i saw him twice in concert, and i thought he put on a really good show. i met him at an afterparty, and he was drunk and flirting with me. that turned me right off. i told this story on this site before. that just is not attractive to me. i never really listened to him too much after that.

Bless you for postin a live version of Love TKO! I was trying to decide what my favorite song of his is. Yikes! Love TKO and Joy from his solo period. Most all of the Blue Notes material is superb, specially when Sharon P was sanging.

And was it Freddy Jackson who got caught up in the dust from Luther? He was a fine singer as I recall, and didn't seem to be trying to sound like Luther, but somehow got pegged as a LV wannabe or sound alike. Same with Jaheim?

Come on, it is not even at some John Mayer level. (Who could still touch my hairs, but would not get coffee in the morning, or go away with my phone number. He is fine as hell, come on now.)

Legend and Keys - overrated like a Bank Loan but delicious like a 5* restaurant.
