Anybody Remember Frankie Goes To Hollywood--Relax?

I remember Frankie Goes To Hollywood from the ole days? Anyone else like them? Here is one of their most controversial videos back in the day...seems kinda tame now... lol

I used to love Frankie...

Or more to the point Trevor Horn, who was resposible for a great deal of their music.

I just listened to the ..Pleasuredome album again not long ago, and it's still a great record.

I don't remember the Frankie t-shirts being day-glo, but i bought one with "Frankie says Fuck" on it, my mum was not happy, but she let me keep the t-shirt. lol

I think that's the one! A lot of S & M and group sex...altough there was an "extended" version of the song and video as I recall... Forgive the use of language... lol

liverpool has just had a 2cd deluxe edition released with outtakes etc. the first album had a deluxe edition last year

the t shirts actually said "fankie SAY relax" and not "says". paul morley wrote the logos and sleevenotes and stuff, katherine hamnet originated the 80s slogan t design such as "choose life" as worn by wham!

i met nash at the o2 at one of the prince shows, he was going to at least one more show

Such a shame to find out he was a homophobic prick:

You were dealing with this during the Reagan years when the AIDS crisis was exploding and the progressive attitude regarding gays started reversing. It must’ve been hard to contend with that while the music industry pushed you to be the next Mary Jane Girls.
Wendy and Lisa, nearly in unison: That’s exactly what they wanted.
Wendy: We couldn’t have been more opposite of that. We were just geeky musicians. We still are. We did a record 10, 11 years ago with Trevor Horn that was never released. We were hoping that we would have the next ****ing Grace Jones “Slave to the Rhythm” extravaganza. We thought, “This is going to be genius! We’re going to be musician freaks and experiment.” And he, honest to god, wanted us to be the Spice Girls. My heart was broken.
Lisa: Not only that, but he was so homophobic. I hate to say it, but he wouldn’t even let us eat off of his silverware on Friday because he was Jewish. It turned into this nightmare. He and his wife, oh God, I don’t want to talk disparagingly about anybody, but it made us very uncomfortable.
Wendy: Our homosexuality became quite an issue for them.

That’s especially disturbing coming from the guy who produced Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Grace Jones and the Pet Shop Boys.
Wendy: And Marc Almond and ABC and t.A.T.u. You name it.
Lisa: He would come in and start talking, “Well, I asked my rabbi about homosexuality and my rabbi said it’s comparable to being born a mass murderer. You can be born a mass murderer, but if you practice mass murder it’s sinful.” I was like, “Okay, you can be born gay, but if you practice being gay, you might as well be a mass murderer?” Oh, thanks Trev. Let’s record this song now.

Taken from an Out Magazine interview.

I got pretty close to them especially around the last years before and during their break up, I use to hang out with them quite a bit in studios, clubs and even went on there last tour with them, we was riding around in tour cars with them, they paid for me and my friend hotel rooms, everything. There great guys love them.

Its strange he would be openly homophobic and then produce gay artists, if he did say that its very two faced of him but the article may not be true. I hope not.

Wendy & Lisa are honest to a fault and they would have posted something on Twitter or Facebook or on their site if they were misquoated. There is major bad blood between Trevor and them. He screwed them over royally.

and whilst slave to the ryhthm is mentioned, frankie was one of the acts that recorded it before grace jones became the artist to release it. the frankie version was going to be included on the welcome to the pleasuredome deluxe edition but at the deadline for completion of the release they couldn't find the mastertape so opted not to release a poor quality version. there were a few other tracks that weren't included in the recent reissues because they couldn't find the masters. a shame as some of the intended tracks were pretty cool. there is a whole bunch of outtakes and stuff circulating. there was a whole bunch of post pleasuredome sessions because they just kept on working on the album that because liverpool. the album suffers as a result of tracks being reworked and reworked, when the end results don't sound that different from the earlier versions

ztt have a fucking shitload of unreleased stuff in the vaults, partly because trevor horn would just record and record and rework stuff until he was happy with it, and most of the time he wasn't happy so entire albums would be shelved. seal has a shelved album as well as wendy and lisa (which is circulation amongst fans)

Yeah W&L wouldn't need to lie over something like that, I thought the magazine may have of misquoted them and the article was old?

But him being homophobic, if the likes of Holly Johnson and Marc Almond knew I dont think they would of worked with him, they wouldn't of put up with that shit. Unless they did know he was homophobic and used him as much he used them. And that would tie in with W&L be screwed over, maybe thats all on his mind is making money any which way he can.

Cha know, half the stuff that ended up on Friendly Fire isn't even from the Horn sessions. There's a boat load of stuff they worked on that's never seen the light of day. Such a shame.

Hmm, its very recent article. I'm shocked hes like that.

Oh well Frankie goes to hollywood got what they wanted outta of him and visa versa. FGTH are no more and never will get back together. Holly johnson cause the break up and problems with the band with his attiude and ego plus other things like not turning up for reheasals while the other members were working there butts off, it caused a lot of tension and arguements so he left. They did try and get back, the rest of the band members(who are still friends), but yet again Holly's ego got the better of him, it didn't work. The rest of the band memebers have moved on.

Has Horn ever said anything in response to the accusation? It seems so bizarre, given his career. Someone must've asked him about it, after the article hit the stands, surely!

Is there anything that would help explain it (even if it didn't justify it)? Did he turn ultra-religious sometime between the mid-80s and the time of the project with W&L, for example? (I seem to recall a story about Prince also trying to get Wendy to 'repent' about her sinful lady-lovin' ways, when he was at the high-water mark of his bible-thumping, a few years back, for instance.)
