No, they wouldn't respect you. Trust me. They'd laugh at you if you sat up there and said "I also think DJ Quik is a genius". So you go do that and come back and let us know how that went.

Stevie and Prince are the 2 that immediately come to mind. Thing is, DJ Quik NEVER came to mind. Funny how that is. wink

I've done it a million times and yes, most people are open minded enough to accept others opinions even if they disagree. And I've worked as a music journalist in the past, and I'm currently making documentaries about Prince, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Smiths and Talk Talk for one of the biggest radio stations in the UK, so I have in depth conversations with music fans on a daily basis.

Sorry, you lose.

I've been on the net for over 10 years now, and if it's anything I've learned it's people claiming to be this or that. You're no different. You could be lying or you could be telling the truth, either way, DJ Quik is no fucking musical genius. So, I guess we ALL lose lol.

Here's what I believe about Dr. Dre. He and others like him who use sampling in their music is no different than what Mozart for an example, has done in his day. Mozart was considered a genius to many because he can take music from the original artist and play with it: add and take away notes, create his own flavor. Dre and others has done that, but in addition, Mozart read, write, composed his own music, and was knowledgeable with musical instruments. I think the issue is today's producers who rely heavily on autotunes, mixers, synthesizers, and other contemporary musical technology to compose music. Without it, the real question is can they read and write music, can they play instruments. No doubt that Prince, Stevie Wonder or even Quincy Jones can, but can Dr. Dre? Without musical technology, will they be left with just a melody in their heads? Maybe, many of us appreciate the artist more than the art, but then the art of music is subjective, just the way you think or feel about an musical artist.

You STILL fail to understand that it's all relative to context. Is Quik a genius compared to Prince or Stevie? Or course not. Is he a genius compared to 99% of hip-hop producers? Fuck yeah. It's really not that hard to understand.

As for the documentaries, here's the first two:

http://www.mixcloud.com/XFM/

January was Metallica, Feb was PiL, March is Depeche Mode, April is Prince, May is either gonna be Sonic Youth or REM (since there's a possibility Stipe is coming to the UK and we can interview him), RunDMC is June..... etc. biggrin

The real interesting thing here is why you just can't seem to acept that I don't agree with you. yet here you are STILL trying to get me to see it your way, when it ain't happenin', Cap'n. You don't see me trying to force feed my opinion on you, do you? No. So why in God's name are you so hellbent on trying to get me to see your side. I don't. Deal with it. Are you gonna lose any sleep over it? Is it gonna impact your life in any way? I hope not. Move on. End of discussion.

Actually, I can. My entire point from the beginning was that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that's it's rude of you to laugh at others simply because you don't agree. I could give a fuck about your opinion.

NOW it's the end of the discussion.

Nah, don't expect that. Just pointing out that it won't get you anywhere in the real world. Neither will your patronizing "kid" remark, or usage of the "most-douchebag-word-of-2011" that you ended your comment with.

You are hilarious though. Like a cartoon character. Which I guess is what you're going for.

OVERRATED!!!!!!! To keep things in it's proper context. Since I lived through it and experienced it. I would say Dre is at least responsible for at least 6...yes 6 classic genre defining hip hop albums. People have to remember he made his mark during what many consider hip hop's golden age and most creative period. Also he was one of the 1st hip hop producers to utilize live instruments when the known popular hip hop producers were sampling. Check the credits people. So lets look back. * denotes a classic

N.W.A Straight Outta Compton* -(is lyrically waaay better than 90% of the stuff from the last 10 yrs)

Easy E- Easy duz it* - again for the time ground breaking.

Now people tend to over look his other productionxs that took place after these releases.

The D.O.C. - No one can do it better. Which is a dope album. He just got in a accident that cut his career short.

Above the Law -Livin' like Hustlers'. Again solid produced album. Sub par emcees. Production solid. Overlooked cause they weren't NWA and Cube had begun his defection from the camp.

Michel'e - Nicety. A well produced r&b album. He stepped out there and it was moderate hit. With 3 charting singles.

NWA - A 100 MILES AND RUNNIN' - Cube presence was missing. Still he made the ep work. Track were solid.

NWA Niggas4life - again Cube's presence was missing. The album not "Straight Outta.." still held it's on in early 91.

Dre Dre- The Chronic* - Hip hop can be observed two ways Hip hop before "Straigh Outta" and Hip hop after "The Chronic". Nuff said a genre changing album. Period.

Snoop -Doggystyle* - A Chroinc mega-bomb follow up. Again....Snoop hasn't released anything on this caliber since.

Now here is when jokers started claiming Dre took credit for their work. Yet when they got their moments to shine they fell waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy short.

Lady of Rage - Eargasm- somewhere in Dre's vault is the album he did for her. The relese she put out was produced by Daz and it shows. However her "Afro puffs" Dre produced single was a huge hit.

Dr. Dre - The Aftrermath and Chronic 2001 - were solid products. The latter was clearly above a lot of what was released at that time.

The Dre brings out Em*....we all know what those albums did. Then just when you thought he was done. He lends 50 his best material for "Get Rich*..." which bascially made 50 and set the bar so high that 50 has yet to match or duplicate.

Granted Quik is more musical that Dre but Quik suffered from having well wack emcees. Dre is no Stevie ,Prince or Quincy. But neither is Primo, Pharrell or any of those other hip hop producers mentioned. He was a dj who produced records better than most of his dj producer peers.

If Dre is overrated then so is Rick Rubin. lol. It's like growing up watching Kobe then saying "Jordan was overrated". Not many hip hop producers have resume that matches Dre's.

"I help invent gangsta rap" - Dr. Dre

"You without me is Harlod Melvin w/o the Bluenotes....Y'll neva go platinum"- Snoop

You're probably talking to MC Eiht. You can't win. lol

As for the thread, I think Dre is overrated but he's still the most influential rap producer. Quik is in the same league as far as I'm concerned. I'd give the edge to Dre though if I had to pick. I don't know the total extent of his involvement but the record(s) stands for itself: NWA, the D.O.C., Snoop, Eminem, 50, himself, etc.

Like it or not the musical geniuses of the mid 80's through the 90's were rap producers. You can turn up your noses at their methods and complain about what they couldn't do but ask yourself what the best music was. Prince was envious and scared of them for a reason. There's a reason MJ sought them out. Mozart had his day, the Beatles had theirs, as did Stevie, Prince, and so on. Like Militant said, they were all geniuses in their own rights. We all have our preferences. I would personally take Midnight Marauders over any Mozart composition but that doesn't mean Mozart isn't a genius. The reverse is the same. You can only compare people within their own contexts meaning there are Mozarts of rap, or Dr. Dre's of rock-- however you want to look at it.

Actually, I can. My entire point from the beginning was that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that's it's rude of you to laugh at others simply because you don't agree. I could give a fuck about your opinion.

NOW it's the end of the discussion.

OVERRATED!!!!!!! To keep things in it's proper context. Since I lived through it and experienced it. I would say Dre is at least responsible for at least 6...yes 6 classic genre defining hip hop albums.

"I help invent gangsta rap" - Dr. Dre

Yep. He definately helped to ruin things.

Andy is a four letter word.

As a producer he has came up with some good beats that he obviously sampled from a lot of 1970's artists. other than the chronic and snoop dogg's first album what has he done that is so great. NWA had some some nice beats but lyrically they weren't saying much either. So why does Dre get so much praise?????

You didn't like any of the tracks for The Chronic 2001 album?!?

^^ Dre did not produce ANYTHING since even before NWA. Hell, while in NWA, Ice Cube was writing Dre's lines! In fact, Ice Cube wrote MOST of NWA's lyrics.

Ice Cube AND MC Ren wrote most of the lyrics for all of NWA. nod Dr. Dre did the beats.
