Dinah Washington - Icy Stone

This is one of those gems that only Mother Washington could put her emotional stamp on. Recorded a couple days before her death; the song Icy Stone wasn't released until the tenth year anniversary of her passing. This song was apart of vinly recorded box-set titled, "Echoes Of An Era - Dinah Washington".

Harlepolis

The last sessions sound so eerie to me. I know many people say this about the final years of every artist lol but just to prove my point, people should listen to Stranger On Earth and they'll understand what I meant.

I've heard her peel her heart on so many autobiographical songs, but that song hit home the hardest.

Never heard of Icy Stone before though eek good god.

True. biggrin

As far as I know the only other person to sing this song is . . . Sarah Vaughan. Suprise, surprise. lol I'll assume because for a time songwriter Henry Glover worked at Roulette Records where both ladies had signed with that lable.

Icy Stone, was penned by Henry Glover and Morris Levy, the same cats that wrote, "California Sun". The interesting things is Henry Glover was truly a renaissance man, he was a producer, arranger, songwriter (occasionally using the alias of Henry Bernard), engineer, trumpet player, talent scout, A&R man, studio constructor . . . became a top record excutive (in 40's) of the largest independent record lables (King Records) when jobs such as, weren't held by African Americans. He discovered "The Band", they had been session musicinas at Roulette Records and he wrote and produce all genres of music . . . country, blues, jazz, r&b, pop and rock music. Everyone form Jame Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, The Band, The Romanes, Etta James, Billy Preston, Lou Reed, Marianne Faithful, and Merle Haggard have sung his songs.
