Run-DMC feat. Pete Rock & CL Smooth ~ Down With The King You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Love it! A modern feel with call-backs to classic Run-DMC. Good times, good times... "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

For as classic as their 80's era was, this was always my favorite Run DMC song. Pete Rock was on fire with his production at this time. |

WOW!!! Haven't heard this one in awhile. Thanks for posting Micky D! Although this song came later in their career, it ranks up there with some of their best stuff. I agree Militant, Pete Rock was one of the hottest producers at the time (early 90's). Everybody would go to PR for a remix back then

this definitely is 1 of my faves from them,... this would still kill more than 1/2 the "rappers" out there 2day If U came 2 get your 'Purple Rain' on...U'RE IN THE WRONG HOUSE!!!!!!

...and a lot of the time, his remixes were better than the original versions.
You heard his remix of Monica's "Before You Walk Out My Life"? That is the fucking JAMMMMM!!!!! The drums drop hard like a MF! |

Here's another track from the same record. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Pete Rock & CL Smooth ( They reminisce over you ) is one of my all time favorites.

Odd that it was around this time that Run began to practice his ministry and this is when the group really started to fall apart.

DMC lost his voice also. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

That too. It's strange because before I knew of the story behind their collapse, you thought all three of them were still close after 20 years. Didn't know how fractured Run and DMC were in terms of their friendship. Jam Master Jay was literally the middle man and the one who kept the peace within the trio and his death not only ended Run DMC but ended their friendship for good. Though I think they still think of each other as brothers.
Oddly enough this album featured more raps from Run (and other rappers) than DMC. I think he started losing his voice around the time of the making of the album.

and the great non-album cut:

"Non-album"? Isn't "Don't Curse" on Peaceful Journey?
I have never, ever preferred the Pete Rock remix of "Shut 'em Down" over the original. The original sounds hard and angry (like it should), but the remix is a little too smooth for me. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Pete Rock also produced the sick track for Nas The world is yours.

it is, actually... 'you can't see what i can see' was the one not on an album... i confused them. i do have the 12", but got 'em mixed up... thanks for correcting me.
i prefer the original to 'shut 'em down' as well, but i do like the remix...

No problem. Ah, "You Can't See What I Can See"... how in the world does a track like that NOT make the album?
Yeah, I agree about "Shut 'em Down." "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

i know, right? i love how hev recycles the line he uses in 'we write the songs' in 'you can't see what i can see'... the "drink coco colo..." line.
