the STEVIE and michael connection... to me, STEVIE is the creative father, and michael is the sun/son. the two greatest artists in all of the universe. it would have been amazing to see them collaborate more... and if anyone has actually seen the australian show when they appeared on stage together (for michael's bad tour), can you please let us know how that show was??!! that to me had to have been the BEST SHOW EVER IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!!

I know they done at least one other song together that hasn't been released called "a pretty face is" it was brought up in 1988 I believe and was also a possibility to be included on the Dangerous record. Then there's Michael talking about a song Stevie wrote that didn't make the cut for Thriller. I forgot what innerview that was. That could be the same song or a totally different song. Then there's that J5/Stevie project from 1974. At least Buttercup got released which is a JAM.
Stevie and Mike are my two fave artists of all times. I've always thought Michael coulda done a great cover version of "all day sucker" from "songs" for sure. And then I believe both Mike and Prince were influenced by Stevie's "Maybe Your Baby" in different ways.
Michael was around for multiple recording sessions that Stevie did...From the early 70s till late 70s...and was there when Stevie was in the process of creating "Songs In The Key Of Life". That's around when Stevie presented him with the idea of "I Can't Help It" around 1976 or 1977.
Till 1984 Michael would visit Stevie and vice versa at times as well.
Then there is these similar sounding songs that they both had...
In particular "upset stomach" and "we are here to change the world"
And I think Stevie was influenced by Michael as well as New Jack Swing for his song "Gotta Have You".

This doesn't feature Stevie but always sound like Bryan Loren wanted to feature Stevie...especially with the keyboard Harmonica near the end...And the chord changes.

There's a tape that I have SOMEWHERE...of Michael and Stevie at Nelson Mandela's 80th Birthday Party in 1998...when they see each other they greet and are very friendly joking and laughing together...Stevie hits some silly notes and Mike is laughing...They hung out for a while in Africa there...Stevie told a story in 2006...that while they went on a Safari trip together (that also featured the late Syreeta Wright and Jazz player Najee) that wanted wanted to check out the Lions. And Mike desperately wanted to get closer...Stevie was hearing noises like ROAR...and Mike kept saying can we get closer...Stevie wasn't feeling it too much... lol
Then when they got back home they hung out at the Motown Museum with Rev. Jesse Jackson and and Rev. Al Sharpton. Stevie took pics of Michael and they were having a good time...Then they was told one of Mike's gloves got stolen that he donated to the Museum. Then Stevie is like...it's me Mike...I took your glove.

yes for sure... loren was gonna give this song to michael, but he didn't want it. when i first heard this song, i was like, 'STEVIE'S sound is all over this!!!'

i told my sister that the 'parade' album was definitely influenced by STEVIE (especially songs like 'do u lie')- i mentioned 'maybe your baby' to her... she didn't see a connection. i also see a major connection with songs like 'housequake', with the vocal modifications, which STEVIE did in songs like 'maybe your baby'.

yeah! i heard the story about the glove, and the lion... but not the other stuff! it's so wonderful to have people show an equal appreciation for the father and son!!! he really did love his 'sun'.

Yes, and a song like "Venus De Milo" was also influenced by Stevie's "Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants" I feel.

We are really similar when it comes to our love for Stevie and Mike!!!

i love seeing them together. i think STEVIE really did love him like a son, like james brown did. i don't care, i think STEVIE was michael's true father. i stand by that. even though they have an 8-year age difference, STEVIE is his creative father.

i haven't even seen the 'memorial'. this is all i've seen. a man who loves his son/sun.

i think the 'japan' album is lackluster, in terms of the J5's live performances; but it's good to have for completion's sake...

Yep me too...And I think what you said is right. At the very least they were like family for sure.

I don't know about father/son since they were only eight years apart, but they definitely had a big brother/little brother thing going on.

That memorial performance tore me the hell UP chile. I was at work watching that thing and LOST. IT. I've only seen that memorial once, on that day and can never ever watch that again or hear that song again. I ain't even clicking on that link.
The influence Stevie had on Michael is very apparent during the Off The Wall/Triumph era I think. I love how these two loved each other, as mentor and mentee, maybe almost a father figure to Michael. It seemed that Michael was always searching for that touchy feely huggy supportive kind of love he didn't get from his father. He felt that way about Berry even after things went sour with Motown and with Stevie as well.
Prince esta muerto...

How about Paul McCartney? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

that's why i say STEVIE is michael's creative father... for me, i see more of STEVIE in michael than i see james brown or anyone else in him. it's the message, the intent. for me, it's not really about the performances, but the impact of the messages the send. they both are the greatest teachers the world will ever know. to me, anyways.

the stuff you posted (when STEVIE is the main player) i love... 'we can work it out' is a billion times better than the original, and i love michael's version of 'girlfriend'. i am not into mc cartney at all (and i think he ruins a lot of music just by being there- for instance, the demo version of 'the girl is mine' is the one that should have been on the album instead of the mc cartney dreck).
i also like 'the man' but not 'say say say'. i actually have the pipes of peace album, and some wings stuff. but i can't listen to it. i'm not even really into the beatles. i like some of their songs (mostly the harrison ones), but not enough to call myself a fan.
and 'ebony and ivory' is just 'the girl is mine' with STEVIE- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... [Edited 3/7/11 20:57pm]

The Jackson 5 covered quite a few of Stevie's songs during their time at Motown, it's surprises me Universal hasn't released a "The Jackson 5 Sings Stevie" compilation
1. My Cherie Amour (from Diana Ross Presents) 2. Don't Know Why I Love You (from ABC) 3. I Was Made To Love Her (from Boogie) 4. Shoo Be Doo Be Doo Da Day (from Ben) 5. With A Child's Heart (from Music And Me) 6. Superstition (from Live In Japan) 7. Let's Get Serious (from Let's Serious) 8. You're Supposed To Keep Your Love For Me (from Let's Get Serious) 9. You're Supposed To Keep Your Love For Me (Original 1974 Version) * 10. Buttercup 11. A Place In The Sun * 12. Heaven Help Us All * 13. A Pretty Face Is * 14. Fingertips * 15. For Once In My Life * 16. If You Really Love Me * 17. Yester Me, Yester You, Yesterday * 18. Get It (from Characters)
* is unreleased songs "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

i love these tracks especially... i would REALLY love to hear michael sing 'a place in the sun'... i think he'd be SANGIN on that one. i love both versions of 'with a child's heart', but michael did indeed give it a sombre sound. it definitely had more jazz elements to STEVIE'S joyful pop reading of it.
the jackson 5 also covered STEVIE'S 'just a little misunderstanding', amongst many other tracks. i figure that someday motown/universal will release the album STEVIE did with the brothers. i'm sure it's pure gold. speaking of, it would also be so beautiful if michael ever did a rendition of 'stay gold'.
here's another similarity between the two though:
i love 'fun day', and the demo version of 'the girl is mine is FAR superior to the 'thriller' version.
