Grace Jones As An Icon

I adore Grace a lot.... but it kind of saddens me she is such a huge icon but mainly for her looks, and crazy dresses more so then her music. I Just really love her albums and wish her music was more well known.

People who i ask randomly either doesn't know who she is, or know her as weird, eccentric or anything of that manor do you feel i am right in this that her icon status is mainly more so in her style and personality more so then music?

i don't see her as an icon (as i don't see people as icons), but i think she is great! to answer your question, i think she represents different things to different people.

some people see her as the crazy, scary androgynous lady. others see her as a fashion maven. some see her as a musical queen. for me, i love her assertiveness. i love her fearlessness.

The thing is, it was Grace's decision to go down that path as far as out-there style, being a pop-culture icon outside of just music. Doing the James Bond movie as well, you know. And taking a 19 year gap between her last two albums LOL.

It does seem that she is more well known now for those other aspects to the general public.

she was always more well-known as weird pop-culture icon than as a singer. the music was just a vehicile concoted for her. she's barely got anything that can even be classified as a "hit," musically, so it isn't surprising that that isn't what she's known and remembered for.

Grace Jones is just remarkable. I love how her music has transitioned over the years. Plus I admire her fashion sense as well. cool

She is a fashion and LGBT icon but I wouldn't call her a pop icon. Come to think of it, that crappy Unsung series should do an episode on her. Sadly it won't happen cause there's about two brain cells amongst the entire staff that work on that show.

True, her only top 40 hit was Pull Up The Bumper, and her only other hot 100 hit was I'm Not Perfect

I beg to differ... in the US this may be the case, but especially in Europe she is known first and foremost as a singer, scoring three top 5 hits here in Holland alone. She has been touring in support of her "Hurricane" album (unreleased in the US) on and off for two years and keeps on selling out venues.

Just like the white winged dove...

as I said, she's more well-known for other things. and even in Europe, she doesn't have a lot of bona fide hits. as I said, music was the vehicle to those other things. it's your go-to medium for continued pop culture relevance.

I think the music and fashion style/look of Grace Jones was a marriage of sorts. Not so much one thing so she could do or be another. She loves to be on stage and perform and sing for people.

I love Grace, i am huge fan. Just love everything about her.

Seen her live twice, and maybe going to a second gig here in Holland, because she is again performing here. She really put on a amazing show, and she is very in touch with her fans and audience.

She isn't that famous to be called really a huge Icon, but yeah i actually see her more as a Fashion Icon more than a music icon, because she didn't sold a lot of records or made big hits.

But that doesn't mean her music is bad... her music is WAYYY underrated, she has a lot of great albums!!

She is very underrated in my option.

Nightclubbing is a masterpiece!
