They're both soulful in their own ways.

I was reading comments on youtube from some Gladys stans talking about how they should switch titles since Ms. Knight is better than Aretha in the soul department.

I personally prefer Aretha but they're both obviously amazing.

Eh don't let them bother you. Aretha became the Queen for a reason. lol But Gladys is G.R.E.A.T. at what she has done and she comes closest to that title better than anyone (Patti included).

I'm a bigger fan of Aretha but if Gladys had gotten better material she could easily be known as the Queen.

One advantage Gladys has over Aretha is she's been in the public eye longer, almost 60 years by this point. (Aretha has 55 years almost). Plus her dealings with Motown definitely hampered any chance she would've been really Aretha's competitor for the title, not to mention she spent most of her years as lead vocalist of a group, mainly a family group that was close-knit.

Aretha was a great soul singer, but her desire to be more sent her into other genres of music such as: jazz, pop, blues, classical and even some country and rock cover.

Gladys has alwasy remained pretty much true to the genre of r&b/soul music.

The major problem is the vast majority of Gladys' career she was the lead singer in a group.

Aretha has always been a solo singer - so they were never competitors in that regard, ditto for Patti LaBelle.

When Aretha wants to sing in a straight on soul type way (especially prior to her vocal decline due to smoking for for 40 years), no one could touch her. Her albums I NEVER LOVED A MAN, SPIRIT IN THE DARK and THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE WITH YOU, ooze with soul, adn so does SPARKLE and ALMIGHTY FIRE.

Both are outstanding female singers of r&b/soul music. The best 1, 2 punch period!
