Black sheep of the family.

To her credit,at least she acknowledged this lol I remember a Black Beat interview from the mid-80s,where she said "Every family has one member who's not as talented....sort of the black sheep of the family, you know.In this family,I'm that person".

I think she should have pursued a different career path instead of trying to become a singer. Why does every Jackson have to be an entertainer, anyway? LaToya should have studied to become a lawyer or something.

Nah...She wasn't the only one, but we're not gonna go there lol

Joe Jackson pushed all of his kids into music even though some of them didn't want to do it.

I was just gonna say this. Rebbie, Latoya and Janet definitely had reservations into doing music and the older two didn't seem real good at handling that while Janet basically hustled to get to the top (which is important, if you wanna be famous and sell records despite the odds, you hustle). Latoya did want to go to college at one point but Joe advised her not to because, of her name, of course.

Wonder why they haven't bothered to reissue "My Special Love" instead of her debut for a second time? Sounds like a pretty good album.

The Queen of Pop's stunning single, Baby Sister, taken from her massively underappreciated album Imagination, was a critical success when it won the 'Outstanding Song Award' at the 16th Annual World Popular Song Festival in Japan. Criminally, it never received an accompanying promotional clip at the time, hopefully this peculiar oversight has at last now been rectified with this video...!

He didn't advise Latoya. He ORDERED Latoya to pursue an entertainment career. After all, Joe couldn't make money off of Latoya if she took a degree...ooopps, did I burst a bubble or two?

yep, i remember janet saying she wanted to be a jockey. but there's no money in that (for joe).

janet was luckier than rebbie and latoya in that she was younger when mtv ruled the waves, and after mj opened that door for black artists and madonna for female artists, janet was in a prime spot to walk through them.

i'm not so sure if it had not been for those factors, plus jam and lewis, that she would be where she is now. i don't think she's a natural talent, but like madonna, she plays to her strengths.

It's not "luck". There's no such thing as gaining success and acclaim by "luck". Both Latoya and Rebbie were around when MTV ruled too but they just didn't have "it" factor like Janet. By the way, MJ wasn't the first black artist on MTV and Madonna didn't open doors for females on MTV. There were other females on MTV prior to her debut besides Janet is a black artist.

To be honest, you're just going by assumptions and "ifs" and "buts" that aren't true. If it weren't for Janet, Jam & Lewis wouldn't have been heard by the world at all. They've both stated this several times too.

yeah, billy ocean, as far as i know, recorded it first. it was a long 12" cut, then he put it on his 'nights' album- which is a great album! the la toya version has a different arrangement, but both are to me, amazing.

What made Janet more sucessful than Latoya was that her third album "Control" mirrored her personal life at the time. Her marriage ended and father her being her manager at the time, Janet had more to say in that album and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis brought it out from her.

Latoya just rode on her brothers coat-tails for a showbiz career. Her music was cute but corny. She had to look but not the substance.

Speaking of jams, I wish Prince would have written original tracks for LaToya. But then again, I don't think Joseph OR Katherine would have been thrill with THAT idea! lol

That's a cute one. She has a smattering of good songs. Somebody once put out a digital compliation...I don't think it was her hits, but it had about a song from each album.

Overall, no, she isn't very good. But she had her moments. I think "If You Feel The Funk" is a genuinely good funk, disco song (albiet a very light on the funk and for the most part, a clone of "Got To Give It Up").

Listen to her logic. "One member who isn't as talented?". Joe is a real shit, forcing all his kids into show business. Seems like they've ALL suffered!

I done had a LaToya Jackson weekend, listening to her songs and watching her on the Celeb Apprentice lol. I made a Youtube playlist of songs from her first 5 albums:

http://www.youtube.com/vi...833041F71B

Some of her songs are really very good, I'm wondering why some of them werent bigger hits and why she wasnt a bigger popstar in the 80s.

iI have a few songs from her first few albums, some very nice melodies. I think if she didn't get caught up with jack and found some talented producers who could help her channel herself into her music she would have done far better career wise. Liek someone said her songs are cute but there isn't much substance.

No more drama is a nice recentish song, i feel some emotion

nod Janet broke them into the pop mainstream but they were already known in the R&B community
