I thought I was the only one who got that connection. It was almost as if she was trying to do a weirder version of that video and wasn't that one about seven minutes long too?

Prince never tried to be weird. Gaga does all the time. There's a difference between the two.

OH MY GOD!!! You got a great point there!!! Even the song has traces of it!
I'm hearing the song and "Can You Feel It"... wow, it's almost the same song about almost the same thing (unity) and the videos... I didn't even put the two together. Actually makes more sense than the Madonna connection now.

It's a jack of both. BTW sounds like Express Yourself but has Can You Feel It's lyrics (message) & video.
I don't see what's so original about this woman. I really don't. It's completely clear where she gets inspiration from.

The way she sang it was more like Michael than Madonna though. But yeah it was both at the same time. [Edited 2/28/11 10:47am]

"I'm on the right track baby I was born this way..."
"Can you feel it?! Can you feel it?! Can you feel it?!"
Someone should mash the songs together. And the videos.
You know, just for shits and giggles.

the choreography is...

No matter how you slice the word "tried", their efforts are much the same. The difference is Lady Gaga isn't a peekaboo bunny like Prince was.

GOR-GEOUS! | |

To be honest I was actually waiting for some words to appear in the beginning like they did on Star Wars.

No, they're not. | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Kinda.
The flashiness, the psycho-eroticness...
And then on the other hand, Prince just had "it." Which Gaga doesn't. A strawberry mind, a body that's built for 2. A kiss on the spine, we do things we never do.

LMFAO @ Prince never tried to be weird. Yeah, nothing about him was staged or put on for spectacle, it all was very natural behavior.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
But "it" is a relative term. She may not have it for you. [Edited 2/28/11 11:31am]

She kinda looks like Carrie Bradshaw in the video....
still in dilberations on the song and video, though.
just my 2 cents.

I don't see it. | |

Who said he never staged anything to put on a spectacle? I said that he doesn’t intentionally do things or act a certain way during interviews and such to come off weird. He's just an odd, eccentric person by nature. Gaga tries to come off crazy and odd but she just looks desperate.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He may not pull that shit so much today, since he's all mature and such. But Really, you think nothing Prince ever did during an interview seemed contrived as hell and just put on to seem weird??? He's lucky for fans who actually buy into the act. So much of his stunts of years past was SOOOO put on that (aside from his genius music of course) this is what made him fabulous and, most importantly FUN.
Madonna did it. Cyndi did it. Mtv was such awesomeness back in the day. You'd never know what kind of show these folk were gonna put on, just for an interview.
Gaga is just following along, and I for one am glad for being entertained once again. [Edited 2/28/11 11:46am]

That's very true, I stand corrected on that one! A strawberry mind, a body that's built for 2. A kiss on the spine, we do things we never do.

It also depends what we're applying "it" to (talent/looks/marketablity), I suppose.

As a kid who grew up on cable reruns of all the horrible sci-fi and fantasy movies spawned by the success of Star Wars I really loved the video. A times ut was like watching second-generation VHS copies of Kull, The Neverending Story, and Conan. But at times it suffered from a budget that couldn’t support the length. Jumping to and from those shots of her dancing alone or with the skeleton guy made it pretty obvious where the money went.
And as much as I like “Born This Way,” “Express Yourself” was so much better. But I like that Gaga sticks blatant homages to Madonna in her videos in the same way Dr. Dre wore the Parliament/Funkdadelic shirt. Not many people in the music industry who plunder the past have the balls to admit it.

Well for me, it was like... Prince had "it" (and I say 'had' because I'm referring to his more prime years). He was crazy, he was funky, he put on a show like no other person could. I thought that Sheila E. also had that "it" factor, because she was just the coolest fucking woman alive. And the only lesbian crush I harbour.
It was a biased statement, mostly. I now fully realise that. But like I said, I like Gaga a lot sometimes. She really does have something working for her. The quirkiness, the strangeness, the flashy electro-pop... all of this amidst partial nudity and extreme hair pieces. I just wish she could be as classy-cool as Sheila. Perhaps Janelle Monae better fits that spot... A strawberry mind, a body that's built for 2. A kiss on the spine, we do things we never do.

To be honest, I was waiting for her to go "Luke I am your father".
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Classy-cool isn't her schtick. Just like it wasn't Prince's back in the day, or Madonna's. So her over-the-top antics and costumes wouldn't be nearly as effective if she took on that persona IMO. It's sell it all the way or nothing.
I love Janelle and yes, she is Classy Cool and that suits her to a T. [Edited 2/28/11 12:22pm]

loved the MJ tribute at the end of the video (the gloves) and the symbolism in that even things from outside this world were influnced by him. "what's that book where they're all behind the wardrobe?"
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm kind of lukewarm on the song, it is growing on me, but I love the video! Maybe Gaga is trying too hard but ambition shouldn't be viewed as a bad thing. I'll gladly listen to/watch whatever Gaga is doing vs. anything Katy Perry/Rihanna/Beyonce is doing.
Am I the only one that got a bit of a Superman: The Movie vibe from the beginning of the video, specifically the weird triangle prison thing that Zod, Ursa and Non were put into?

True. Honey, stop talking and just create the music.
