The Diary of Alicia Keys

Was re listening to this album recently and this has some great jams cool

If I Was Your Woman

You Don't Know My Name

Heartburn

Karma

If I Ain't Got You

So Simple

I saw that this girl gets ALOT of hate on these boards=[ i think she is one of the most talented artists if the past decade, in fact she might be my favorite of the past decade along with The White Stripes Lupe Fiasco.

She has a good voice as people point out at time's she goes a little out of range, but i think it is great seeing an artist stripped down playing piano i love that sound, i wish Lady GaGa would do that instead of her pop beats.

I think this is a great album, anyone agree?

Of her her four studio albums, this is the one I like the least. But it's still very good. I like all her records a lot.

Because of all the hate she gets on the org, I don't post on her threads anymore. I made an exception here because this thread was still new and unsullied. razz

I think A. Keys and John Legend both suffer from the "Play It Safe" syndrome. Her skills (from a musicianship standpoint) aren't the problem, it is her content, which is dry and pretty redundant.

As it relates to the Diary album, not bad, but pretty bland. The reason that the album was tolerable was because Toni Tone Tone practically wrote the "Diary" single. Out of all her albums, I do enjoy Songs in A Minor even though many of those singles are in E Minor and C# Minor razz

Artist of the decade, "meh". The last decade has been extremely weak in terms of R+B talent. Keys wouldn't survive the 90s if she tried to release what she peddles now.

But when I hear others on here say, "She can't play piano", that is just utterly ridiculous.

I respect that, and yes true some of her topics are not breaking new ground. But i like her for what she is, but yeah i remember someone on her said she had the skills on piano of a 3rd grader? please lol

"Diary" was the best song on this one to me. In regards to her records, I do think she plays it safe with her overall sound. For such an "acclaimed pianist," as Clive would advertise, you'd expect more. It's the "She has potential" factor I think that leaves people feeling disappointed after going through a new record. At least that's how it is for me. Oversold - Doesn't deliver.

I don't loathe her, I just don't fux with her that much. wink

That is hatred, plain and simple. It's like those people who say, "I can step in the ring with Mike Tyson" and never picked up a boxing glove. As a pianist myself, she isn't pure classical, she is a pop piano player with some R+B thrown in, and there isn't wrong with that.

Yes, her songs are easy for most musicans to pick up since the chord structures are normally triads in root position, or broken 7ths or 9ths, (like in Butterflies), and naturally in E Minor or G Major. However, be at peace with the player haters unable to play chopsticks, let alone one of her songs...

Players like B. McKnight and Stevie Wonder can be a little bit more complicated depending on what song it is.... cool

I like Alicia ok but I don't think much of her music can be described as "stripped down playing piano." Many of her songs feature no piano and in a lot of the songs that do it's buried beneath other stuff, particularly on her last two albums. I think her music has much more in common with Lady Gaga than the soul artists of the '60s and '70s that she is influenced by.

I am kind of hoping that she starts to decline commercially and stops caring about having hit songs. I think her music would get much more interesting if that happened.

Back on topic, The Diary of Alicia Keys is the album that made me a fan of her and it is probably still my favourite album.

As I listen to some of her acoustic sets, and they are great. I like it when it is just her and the piano, and not the silly drum tracks, synths, or over driven bass in her studio releases. If she went the acoustic route, I'd enjoy her a bit more.

I strongly agree with this! I just kept ranking The Diary of Alicia Keys as her best album, but I Am just sounded unlike anything she had done on her first two albums. I think that I Am was her best one, but Unplugged comes close to that title though. I don't care what anyone thinks about Alicia, she killed that set!

I really dug this one from Unplugged:

I forgot how good this album was, I used to play it often, even the track Diary is good and some others that include a lot of piano, the names escape me

Gaga does play piano, she just is doing dance to appeal to the masses

I like that album but it borrows too much from too many well known sources , and most of the time it borrows from people who have already borrowed from other people to begin with ( Alicia sounding a bit like MJ Blige on My Life which is basically borrowing a lot from some classic Curtis Mayfield songs...and the way she sings on that album sounds as if she was exposed to nothing but MJ Blige for months before recording her own vocals).

No hatred here, I really dig that album, but that´s how I feel about it.

And I can´t stand her attitude. I´d like her a lot more if she were a bit more humble, and I mean genuinely humble, not in that fake way.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I did not like her third album either and I admit I had high expectations. As I Am just really hit a nerve for me and I felt that it sounded like something that immediately made you feel good or matched whatever color you felt at the moment. I felt that the third one just seemed almost like she had lost her way. The songwriting just isn't there.

I think she is tremendously talented and I would like her to get back to soul music because that is where her voice belongs and that is where it needs to be! I don't mean retread As I Am (and the finer points of Diary), but you gotta bring better stuff to the table than an album with NOTHING but filler on it.
