I can't tolerate the way those drum machines sound on those songs. It gives them that modern neo stool sound which I hate almost as much as shit hop. In other words, I only like new songs that sound like they were recorded in the 1970s or 1980s. I don't want any elements of the 1990s to the present whatsover. Not even little small hints of the 1990s to the present. I like a song to completely transport me away from these dull years as if they never existed. Andy is a four letter word. | |

Well, here's a question for you. Did you like their mid-80s stuff? They used drum machines back then.
I get ur point about the neo-stool songs, but a song like "Wanna Be With You" would be considered neo-soul by today's standards. It is just a mid-tempo song.
I think u don't really like the arrangements more than u don't like the song. Am I right? **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I have no problem with drum machines themselves. I have a problem with today's sounding drum machines which have a shit hop sound. Prince used drum machines on the "1999" album and he mixed them with real drums to give them power. Even if he didn't mix real drums with them, the sound of the drum machines that he used didn't sound like today's drum machines.
House music uses drum machines and they don't sound like today's drum machines. They pound much harder and just have a different sound than today's drum machines. Today's drum machines resemble the drum machines in shit hop and I despise even the smallest hint of shit hop. I absolutely hate shit hop and don't want to hear anything that even resembles it from it's sound, to it's slang, to it's attitude because it's done far more damage than Shitney Houston could have ever done. If I'm not mistaken, a lot of these songs use the same drum machines, they are just programmed differently.
Sounds like you're not a fan of the arrangements then. To me, a good song is a GOOD song, regardless of the instrumentation. I find this to be the case with a lot of modern day blues and r&b songs. The arrangements are cheap and the drum machines are not programmed to compliment the songs, but the actual music is really good. God knows that is the only way that I can tolerate some of these blues songs.
Another thing is that music is like anything else; it is "trendy." It comes and goes in waves. Personally, I miss the trend of the 70s and 80s. I am always in amazement when I watch award shows. These award shows are designed to promote what's "new" and "hip" in music, but most of the time, ends up promoting some well established artist. I don't remember this happening in the 80s and early 90s. Most of the established artists were still following trends and releasing "up to date" music. Today is not the same. It's like a the music industry looks at an established artists as "old and dated."
Remember, in the 80s and 90s, it was not uncommon to see Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Rait, Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Gladys Knight and others selling very well. Sure, they weren't selling 20million copies of a cd, but they compteted very well in the market place. Today, you hardly see any catalog artist on the hot 100. Hell, in today's society, you don't see any on the hot 100 over one week. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-
