I completely understand your reaction but if you strip away stage performance and go by sonic/musical experimentation, I feel a clearer connection between "in the air tonight" and "when doves cry" than I do to almost any two songs that might be compared between MJ and Prince.
To me Michael is pure and perfected "pop" but Phil Collins and Prince had a level of grittyness to them in their early 80's albums that very few mainstream artists of the time achieved. While the musical styles varied, to me there is a kinship in the harshness of songs like "the roof is leaking" by Phil Collins and songs like "annie christian" by Prince that reflect a sense of the underlying darkness that was just under the surface of the "happy" Reagan era.
Anyway, thats as close as I can come to a logical explanation of how I feel they compare. While I don't expect anyone to agree, I do hope it at least makes sense.
peace!

My favorite from him in recent months has been "I Don't Care Anymore" from his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going! | |
