female drummers and percussionists!

i was inspired by the thread about cindy blackman marrying mr. santana... and i don't think women get a lot of light relating to drumming and percussion... so here it go!

CINDY BLACKMAN:

TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON:

CHAKA KHAN:

KAREN CARPENTER:

CORA COLEMAN-DUNHAM:

SUNAYANA GHOSH:

AND THE QUEEN, SHEILA ESCOVEDO!!!

i know there are plenty more, but there's not that much room... who are some of your favourites?

MJJstudent, I know you love Punk. L.A.'s old school Punk band The Controllers had a female Drummer named Carla Maddog:

I think you can find sample of their songs on Youtube.

Samantha Maloney is pretty good. I hate Motley Crue but she did a good job filling in for Tommy Lee.

Too bad she put up with all that misogyny.

As a featured member of the Tonight Show Band, Vicki Randle's passion for percussion is seen by millions of viewers five nights a week. "I'm proud to be representing an area of music that most people don't have much exposure to," she says. "I get to educate people as well as represent women. When I first began playing there weren't many female role models to learn from" she recalls. "Fortunately I'm able to change that for the next generation of female percussionists."

The oldest of five children, Randle moved to the San Francisco Bay area in the late 1970's, and was encouraged to learn congas by drummer/percussionist Babatunde. She also studied with the esteemed Escovedo family in the San Francisco Bay Area. "It was looked on as an asset to have a woman percussionist, and Sheila E. had a lot to do with that," Vicki says. Randle also used her vocal and percussion talents with drummer/producer Narada Michael Walden in San Francisco.

Vicki Randle, the first female member of the Tonight Show Band, has been an LP artist for over twenty years. Her comments regarding LP shakers and cabasas have led to improvements in the quality of design of those instruments. "LP's instruments are shining stars, they just last," she says. "There's very little that LP makes that I don't use."

She's currently also doing singer-songwriter appearances with her guitar skills

[img:$uid]http://www.tomleemusic.ca/images/Events/200504/KimUrhahn.jpg[/img:$uid]

Kim Urhahn has been playing drums and percussion for almost 13 years and along the way has learned many styles of music, from Classical to Traditional Latin, Musical Theatre to Pop Rock, Punk to Celtic/Bluegrass. Classically trained as a child, Kim discovered World Music in College where she gained a diploma as the first graduate of the Latin/Brazilian Percussion program. She now shares her knowledge through private instruction. Kim has performed in venues from small to large including a 10 week run of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat featuring Donny Osmond. She has also shared the stage with acts such as Bad Religion, Santana and Aerosmith, to name a few. During the past 5 years she has focused her attention on the "Rock Scene" and has founded and been playing the drums for many bands. Also, she has had the opportunity to play with signed acts such as Lillix (Maverick Records) and Barry Greenfield (Sudden Death Records). Kim's current projects include Vancouver based band, Sugarblade, and her newest project, In Davey's Grip, in which she has put the drums aside to sing.

Kim Urhahn endorses Pearl drums, Sabian cymbals, and Vater drum sticks.
