Gwen Stefani Talks New Stars

gwen elle Gwen Stefani Covers Elle; Talks New Stars

As earlier reported, Elle magazine’s May issue celebrates ‘Women In Music’. Covering the special edition is No Doubt stunner Gwen Stefani.

The ‘Hollerback’ singer has been out of the limelight for some time, opting to focus on motherhood, recording with No Doubt and her successful fashion line ‘L.A.M.B’.

In her absence, of course, a new crop of stars have risen to prominence – including the likes of Rihanna, Fergie, and Lady GaGa. Find out after the jump what the 41 year old thinks of the suggestion that such acts have borrowed her style.

Via Necole Bitchie:

Really? I don’t see myself in those girls. I usually put pants on. I see these girls as more going for the sex-symbol thing. I was more, in the band, like a tomboy. Of course, I think every girl is sexy, so there’s going to be a little of that. But I see a lot of younger artists going more toward the sexy thing.

On today’s music longevity

When we were growing up, some of the hits were legendary ones that you hear your whole life. But certain songs, I don’t know if you’ll ever hear them again. Because that’s what that music is, like a guilty pleasure, it’s right at the moment.

I wish this broad would light a fire under her ass and put out a fucking record. It's only been 10 years with No Doubt. My fan patience is worn thin (with Garbage, too, same shit).

Gwen Stefani, 41, Admits: "I'm Very Vain"
Us Magazine

Whether she's on a red carpet or taking her sons to school, Gwen Stefani is always dressed to the nines -- and with good reason.

"I mean, I'm very vain," she tells Elle's May issue (on stands April 12). "That would be my middle name. Of course I am, you know what I mean? I love the visual."

Just don't compare Stefani's rocker style to fellow pop stars Lady Gaga, 25, Rihanna, 23, or Katy Perry, 26.

"I don't see myself in those girls," the L.A.M.B. designer says. "I usually put pants on. I see these girls as more going for the sex-symbol thing. I was more, in the band, like a tomboy. Of course, I think every girl is sexy, so there's going to be a little of that. But I see a lot of younger artists going more toward the sexy thing."

Fashion aside, the singer (and mom to sons Kingston, nearly 5, and Zuma, 2) also opens up about her eight-year marriage to Gavin Rossdale, 45.

"The first time we ever kissed was right around Valentine's Day; we were in New Orleans on tour," she recalls. "I always think about that because it's unbelievable that we've been able to stay together. I feel so proud of us. It's one of my biggest achievements."

Though she hasn't released an album since 2006's The Sweet Escape, Stefani, 41, promises her third CD will be her best yet.

"Prince, who is one of my idols, gave me some advice when I worked with him: 'Have you ever just tried writing a hit? Like, don't just try writing a song; try and write a hit song.' I remember him saying that and me thinking, 'Yeah, you're right. Why would you write anything else?"

"When we were growing up, some of the hits were legendary ones that you hear your whole life. But certain songs, I don't know if you'll ever hear them again," she continues. "Because that's what that music is, like a guilty pleasure, it's right at the moment. It's like fashion -- it's now, then it's gone."

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I don't think she meant that. She was just saying that the music she used to listen to had more meaning and resonated more with the audience, wheras today's music is fleeting at best.

time flies.

I mostly like Gwen, but she and the chicks she mentioned are just working different sides of the same street (actually, worked different sides - I seem to recall some recent Stefani vids where she's rolling about, half-nekkid).

As for her comments about the disposability of today's pop music: Is the percentage higher than in days of yore? Debatable. But does it matter? Most music conveys unhealthy messages, anyway.

Do I like Rihanna, Fergie or Lady GaGa? No. I don't think any of them are intelligent people and what they mostly have to offer to the world is style over substance and a bunch of stupid songs.

But that's just me. razz

I think there's always been a pretty steady percentage of "disposable" pop music. As with many of us, she seems to have fallen into that trap where you view the past through rose-colored glasses.

Yeah, she looks good as usual but where's the new music? Especially a new No Doubt record. Are they at least planning on working on something soon? I miss them.

I really like Gwen, but I hated all of her solo work. It was and is pop trash.

Her music with No Doubt rocks! I love everything they've done as a band.

Yeah, she really looks great on the cover.

"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."
