Oprah brings out a surprise guest.....Billy Dee Williams.

Loved this show. So is the first born, the daughter, Barry Gordon's cause she looks just like him. And is it acknowledged in public?
And damn her boys are fine. That is all.... Space for sale...

Just finished watching it. Wow No mention of MJ? You know Ms. Ross stipulated prior to the interview she didnt want to discuss MJ. As we all know Oprah wouldnt hesitant to exploit MJ's name for ratings she would've been promoting DR talking about MJ all week.
The show was ok but it was just another kiss-ass fest. Oprah mentions DR films LSTB and Mahagony but no mention of The Wiz. ....interesting.(because you know who is in it?)
Ms. Ross looks good I see she got some nice veneers.

Or it could have been cause the film was a universal flop. Space for sale...

Mahogany was a flop too, but Billy Dee wasn't in The Wiz. Referring to your previous comment, Berry Gordy is Rhonda's father. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I thought Mahogony was a hit with audiences just not the critics, no? Space for sale...

Yeah it did great in the box office. The criticism was more or less for Berry Gordy sabotaging Diana's film career.

I haven't been able to watch . . yet.
Yes, it's been acknowledged for quite sometime . . .
Fuzzy memory, but I think Barbara Walter's did the intview (20/20) with Ms. Ross and she acknowledged Rhonda's was Mr. Gordy's daughter. The short story, Rhonda had begun to question her mother on why she didn't look anything like her sisters or her father -the man she thought was her biological father, Mr. Robert Ellis Silberstein.

How was it a kiss ass fest ? Anyway I thought it was decent Billy Dee made it better

I liked it. I love Diana. I was so surprised there was no mention of MJ, knowing how Oprah just can't help herself.

I think Mary Wilson or Martha Reeves would have made it better. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Well as you know Oprah considered Ms. Ross her role model and inspiration. As Oprah said 'You inspired me to dream' (paraphrasing) then DR dedicates a song to her so both are kissing each other's ass. Ok I get it they both great.
I wish BDW got more airtime and got to speak more about working with DR urban legend was they didnt like each other especially filming 'Mahagony'.
Her children are beautiful but I think they were just filabusters when there was nothing more to talk about.... naturally they were going to say nice things about their mother.

What did you prefer Diana to talk about her incidents with the Law you know that was not going to be brought up It's rare for her to do interviews So I was going to watch either way and I thought I heard something about them not getting along as well.

Yep I bet she made it very clear she would not discuss MJ and I say good for her for doing that! I missed the most of the show--came in at the very end when Oprah gave her audience that Samsung tab and Ms. Ross sang Aint No Mountain High Enough. Sounds like it was a good show. I am far from a Diana fan and never could see why people fussed over her. BUT, I will say that by all accounts, she has been a great mom to her kids and they adore her. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I thought the whole thing was terrible. Oprah didn't ask any real questions, and Diana's answers were either incomplete or staged. Like someone said, it wasn't an interview, it was an ass-kissing show. I also don't believe for two seconds that she never demanded that anyone call her "Ms. Ross." The executives at VH-1 that produced her Diva's Live show were interviewed, and confirmed that they were explicitedly instructed to call her "Ms Ross."

OK, I had to turn that crap off; I couldn't even get through that show with a drink in my hand . . . Cabo Wabo Tequila. How's the weather where you live?

Sometimes on this broad when subject of call me Ms. Ross comes up, I'll say in mock humor.
To ge fair to Ms. Ross, I guess it's a generational thing based on manners, social etiquette. I don't call people by their Christian name until I'm given permission to do so. I don't like people whom I don't know calling me by my Christian name either and have no problem saying, my friends call me Trina.

Sarah Vaughan did the same thing. I remember reading her Downbeat interview(from their website) she said flatly, if strangers who got familiar with her and called her by her given name, she'd flatly ignore them. I def understand her reasoning for doing so, and Diane if did demand the same.
Its all about respect. | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Ms. Vaughan wasn't unfriendly but she wasn't all that approachable either; she knew how to throw you some shade, in fact she was a pro at.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
IT was not about respect with Diana, not at all. It was about being a bitch, pure and simple and that generational thing does not apply to Diana-that was the generation before her. Ms Trina, did Sarah throw shade like Dinah or worse? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Nah, it was about respect and manners truly it was and is. But I'll org ya about that.
I never met Ms. Ross but I met Ms. Vaughan several times over the years. Sarah Vaughan really loved what she did but once she left the stage, she wanted to quietly go off and have a very good time with people she knew and vice versa. Before a concert, after a concert, in airports she was never not gracious to fans but she kept it moving. In other settings if you approached her, she had a look and a dry response that would back you up. You did not go up to her saying, hi Sarah.

I used to work with a Gopsel choir here in Europe comprised mostly of performers from New York ( Broadway and off-Broadway types). Alot of them were actually much older than they looked (talk about black don't crack! ), and one of them had the opportunity to work with Ms. Vaughan a few decades ago. I remember this person in particular (who was repsonsible for our training and technique excercises) also worked with Della Reese. He spoke alot how people from that generation commanded respect , and he had all of these anecdotes about Ms. Vaughan and Ms. Reese describing what they were like from backstage to the stage to being out and about in public. They weren't cruel, but them sistas didn't play
