The Rollingstones

Mick Jagger's performance blew me away on the Grammy's. I'm thinking of checking out the Stones. Where doI begin? I love Start Me Up. Is that album any good? Which Stones album from the 80's do you recommend?

I wouldn't recommend any Stones album from the 80's.

60's & 70's.

probably better starting with a compilation, though.

Forty Licks spans 40 years, so you get a sampling of all eras.

for the 60's, Hot Rocks.

for the 70's & 80's, Jump Back

Good idea! Maybe a greatest hits is the way to go first?

Are their 80's albums wack?

To me this band ended after "Undercover of the Night" that was their last good album, since then its been a few decent things, songs here and there, but some really awful stuff too! I mean awful, ever since Harlem Shuffle and "Dancing in the Streets" with Jagger and Bowie, its been downhill

Tattoo You from the 80s is a good album. My first Rolling Stone's album was Some Girls but Hot Rocks is good to start off with I think.

i like the 80s albums by and large. "Undercover" is a great record; wicked, dark, edgy rock and roll.

I know most people would probably tell me tostart with the 70's stuff but I always lean towards the 80's! Undercover huh? Maybe I would start around here and then go back?

As a HUGE Stones fan, go with "Sticky Fingers" (1971) and "Let it Bleed" (1969) first, then go to "Exile on Main Street" (1972)..one of the greatest albums of all time.

The 80's were not the best time for the Stones, due to "issues" within the group. For an 80s album, the first pick should be "Tattoo You" (officially released in 1981, but the tracks date from 1972-1980, with some vocals and stuff added in 81)

Thanks for the tips. I'm gonna listen to samples of these albums on itunes!

Do you know if Mick Jagger's solo work is any good?

Jagger's solo work is hit or miss...instead of buying the individual albums, I would highly recommend "The Best of Mick Jagger" CD that came out a few years ago on Rhino. It picks the cream of the crop of his solo career

I'd go with his Greatest Hits compilation - it's pretty good and covers most of his best solo work, which is definitely hit or miss.

Overall I'd agree that by far their strongest work is the Beggars Banquet thru Exile on Mainstreet period, but I do think that their 80s stuff is underrated in general. Definitely alot of great stuff worth discovering in all of their different eras.

80's: Tattoo You (81, must have, it features Start Me Up, and Waiting on a Friend, their biggest classics of the 80's,) & Undercover (83, underrated, funky, nasty & cool, and their first 80's album with all the tracks "produced, arranged, composed & performed" in the 80's, lol)

I can't recommend Emotional Rescue (80), Dirty Work (86, their weakest album) or Steel Wheels (89)

but the following songs are classics:

-She's So cold

-Emotional Rescue

-Dance

-Let Me Go

-One Hit to the Body

-Mixed Emotions

-Almost Hear You Sigh

-Slipping Away

and other underrated album tracks of that era are: All About You, Indian Girl, Too Rude, Winning Ugly and Had It With You

As for Mick solo, you'll LOVE She's The Boss (85) if you're into mid-80's dance/rock; a couple of good singles (Lucky In Love, Just Another Night), several underrated album tracks (title-track, Runnin' Out of Luck, Lonely At the Top, which is a Jagge/Richards late-70's song) and other filler tracks which at least don't stink...

Avoid Primitive Cool (87), which was pretty uneven (best tracks: Throwaway, Party Doll and Peace for the Wicked), but you should see the Let's Work video if you wanna have some fun watching how low Mick fell in the late-80's lol (pathetic song, pathetic video disbelief lol )

and I STRONGLY recommend Wandering Spirit (93) which features a lean organic sound and a set of 14 killer tracks, all underrated (country ballads, hard-rock, modern R&B, etc); definitely the best album of Mick and better than any post-83 Stones album.

Ignore Goddess in the Doorway (01), it's pretty dull and boring. The Alfie soundtrack was nothing special (best track: All Habits Die Hard)

The Best Of lacks some key songs but it's also recommended...

The Stones in the 70's were untouchable, IMHO. Pick anything from then and you'll love it.

I may need to check out she's the boss since it came out in 85 and you say it's dance/rock? That is definitely the sound i'm looking for.

perhaps you'll LOVE that album, it's full of synths & keyboards mixed with hard-rock guitars and loud drums, and ultracommercial licks. Pure 1985 sound. cool

I ended up downloading this album and I really like it! For now this is a good place to start and then maybe I'll check out other Stones/Mick albums later. Thanks for the recommendation!
