"The Way You Are" Billy Joel Vs. Barry White

I love both versions, but I lean more towards Barry's reading. The rap really took it over the top for me. Which do you prefer?

I agree... I like both versions, too. Of course my first exposure was Billy Joel, but truth be told, Barry could sing or say just about anything and I love it!! Still miss him!!

Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams also did this song as a duet with Stevie Wonder doing the harmonica solo.

I bet Billy likes Barry's version better, because he's prob. sick of singing a song about his first ex wife. It's rare when he does the song. He wrote some of his songs thinking of who would sing it, and he actually conjured Stevie up (New York State of Mind was obviously Ray).

Sinatra covered it, so did Isaac Hayes.

Barry took that song to another level. I like Billy Joel and he made some great tunes, but Barry's version (or interpretation) was excellent. The drama and passion came from Barry, while Billy was more lighthearted and playful. Barry would've taken Billy's woman with his version.

What made it more dramatic with the opening rap, the saxophone solo in this version is more passionate, the dramatic arrangement with the Love Unlimited orchestra and the background vocals. It reminds me of Isaac Hayes version of Walk On By by Dionne Warwick, more dramatic.

I recently saw "Last Play At Shea", it was pretty cool how they made it. It wasn't just a Billy Joel concert, but had a lot about the history of the stadium and the timeline in which it existed. Even if you're not a fan of his, it's still a good doc.

i saw billy in glasgow a few years ago and ...he got the words wrong while singing this ?....he started laughing ....i think he because he has performed it soo many times that he just did it on autopilot....he mentioned that he doesnt really like performing songs like honesty anymore....too sappy i think for him now....
