Smokey + Miracles: "I'll Try Something New"
My favorite Smokey track. I think Prince should've covered it instead of "La La La Means.."!
Anyone else got any favorite Smokey songs?

I like his original version of that song better.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I said it once and I'll say it again: Smokey was best when he was in the Miracles.

Sure you can't deny the power of Smokey & The Miracles, but his 70's solo output was just as rich and soulful. Smokey's legacy with or without the Miracles is so engrossing. Check me out and add me on:

Yeah he had some good cuts in the 80's, but he lost his touch by then a little bit. But his recent album, Funny How Time Flies should've gotten more notice.
Here are some of my favorite 80's cuts:

well he said, 'if the singing thing don't work out, i'll go into the culinary business'. what was up with that 'linda mc cartney' period he had/has?

Agreed! "Just to See Her" was too okey-dokey for my taste and it's just 80's fluff. But this is his best ballad of the 80's, hands down:

I've always liked this version. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
