Yes, John Amos and Ralph Carter had asses to DIE for! And there were plenty of times where you could plainly see which side John was tucked on. But let's not forget about that other thick brother from "Good Times"...Ben Powers aka Keith. Dude had thighs and ass for days. He filled out those skin-tight pants in the episode where he slapped the shit out of Thelma. They were so tight that, from behind, you could make out his bikini underwear-line...

While I recognize that Ben Powers, aka "Keith", was a handsome guy (...sort of reminded me of Al Jarreau), he was never my type. Kind of how a lot of people trip over Derek Jeter, another handsome guy, but wouldn't turn my head on the street (...aside from recognizing it was Derek Jeter).
But now John Amos was a different story. I even purchased "The BeastMaster" on DVD just to see him running around in that loincloth, lol. He would have been my pick of the three on "Good Times". I remember an episode where he and Esther Rolle were in bed, and something happened with the kids in the living room, maybe they were fighting or something. But James Sr. jumped up out of the bed, wearing a pair of pajamas, and you could make out all kinds of weight jumping around in the front of those PJ's as he swung his legs around to get out of the bed, lol. Now THAT scene I will never forget.
I only have the first season box set of "Good Times" on DVD. After this thread, I'm going to need to put my order in for the others, lol.
Incidentally SEANMAN: Who is that #8 Baseball player in your avatar?

^^Yeah, John Amos had a sick body, for sure. That's Cal Ripken Jr. in my avatar. As you can probably tell, Ripken has one hell of an ass too! "Get up off that grey line"

I just can't stop looking at this pic with him in that tight laceshirt, with his nipples peeking out. WOW! As JJ would say, "DYN-O-MITE!"

Thanks. I wanted to ask you about your avatar ever since we were discussing John Legend's ass, lol.

That's another ass we should discuss at another time. He might be small, but LAWD!

LOL I'm liking the turn this thread has taken. But yeah, Ripken is proof that not only black men can have some junk in their trunk. Homie's got some cakes...
That John Legend has got one phat ass! You'd never know he had that much junk. T4P, silverchild! "Get up off that grey line"

Might be worth starting a dedicated thread to the male ass, lol. That way the unwilling won't have to belabor our drool, as I'm sure there could be much more to share. Plus, it would only be fair to the OP, being that we've already deviated so far from the subject of Michael Evans singing "You And I".
Though on Cal Ripken, Jr.: I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I see his face on the news a lot. Seems like a nice guy.
My apologies to the OP: Back to Michael Evans on "Good Times".
Incidentally, since the start of this thread, I've been Googling & Wikipedia-ing a lot of info about the show. Had no idea Esther Rolle fought so hard for the direction of the show, even subsequent to John Amos' departure from it. They should have never killed off James' character and given John Amos whatever he was asking for to stay. But once he was gone, they sure as Hell should have listened to what Esther Rolle was saying. Actually, it appears like they eventually did, but they did so too late. "Good Times" was a hot show, and they kind of killed it by messing with it. Just gotta wonder where the show would have gone if they had kept the original formula.

Them feeding off the J.J. character is what killed it.

They ran it in the ground. JJ's character should have only ever been the ice cream on top. Instead, they tried to make him the main course.

I often wondered how Jimmy Walker felt about John and Esther leaving because of his character. Did he feel that they were being haters, or was he, too, ashamed that JJ had become a buffoon? "Get up off that grey line"
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
No one has really asked him how he felt about the character. I'm guessing it's a touchy subject for him too.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Probably. With him being a comedian, I'm pretty sure he didn't have too much an issue about JJ's antics, but since Esther and John were serious actors, I can see why they had had enough. "Get up off that grey line"

Exactly. To Jimmy it was just a job. John and Esther obviously took it very differently.

a lil' trivia: Ja'net Dubois co-wrote (with Jeff Barry) and sung The Jeffersons's theme song, "Movin' on Up".
I had a chance to see Ms. Dubois -she was signing autographs- at the LA / Crenshaw Block Party two years ago, sista girll hadn't aged a bit and was very personable.

Job or self-worth? If there's a difference than I think you've kinda sold your soul to the devil.
From what I can remember it appears John and Esther gave the producer Norman Lear grief over the scripts; none of their objections were directed a Jimmy per say. . . I don't think.

Technically it's still not on topic, which was about Michael/Ralph singing and not problems the actors had on the set. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I believe that to be true. They realized Jimmie Walker was trying to eat, just like the rest of them.
It's funny how John Amos was only 8 years older than Jimmie Walker, and yet he was playing his father on "Good Times". Not so funny that Esther Rolle was 19 years older than John Amos, and playing his wife, lol.

Yeah it is.
Michael/Ralph did a very nice job of singing, how many times can we say that.

On the original Star Trek show/movies, there wasn't much of a difference in the ages of the actors who played Spock (son) & Sarek (father) either.
