This thread freaked me out because I literally just discoverd this song YESTERDAY! What a crazy coincidence that I see a thread posted for it.

I as listening to my Donald Byrd playlist Friday, and added some songs to it that I found on a Mizell brothers compilation. I then came across a soul music blog that mentioned three songs that the Mizell brothers recorded with Marvin but had been shelved by Motown. They listed this song as one of them.

I downloaded it and have listened to it about five times already. Wild!

I first heard the song around the time I bought Marvin's Gold album. biggrin I had it on repeat. It's one of his great "lost" tracks. cool

TCHUNE headbang . Heard this first when Chris Phillips debuted it on KISSFM (1998?). Back when KISSFM was all about the music.

these are great songs!!! syreeta sang on 'music is my sanctuary'... i love the mizell brothers. 'wind parade' is a great track.

and fonce mizell was one of the folks in the corporation (with gordy, deke richards, etc.), so he has a history with michael.

Yep. The title should've went like "Gary Bartz Featuring Syreeta" because she was all over that album.

My absolute FAVE album from The Mizells.

my favourite gary bartz track: i am also partial because it's got ANDY BEY (one of my favourite ever vocalists) on it. he did quite a bit with bartz, including 'black maybe' (the STEVIE-penned song), which syreeta originally sang.

It's one of his absolute finest tracks, for my money; on a par with What's Going On and Inner City Blues. I love that Marvin could offer social commentary in such a distinctively soft, meditative way, and it has a real power to it, I think - especially with its gorgeous musicianship and production.

I first got properly acquainted with it a few years back after buying the deluxe edition of Let's Get It On, with it being amongst the outtakes from the couple of years leading up to that album's release. (Started a thread about it, as it happens.) Good to see that these days it's turning up on 'best of' albums, along with other knockout tracks from the around then like You're the Man. Imagine having just picked one up 'cos you liked the sound of his earlier hits, and getting an overview of the gems of his 70s/early-80s work! love

Didn't know about the Donald Byrd version. Cheers, MJJstudent! biggrin
