Rock VS. Dance-Pop (Which one is THE most successful music genre of all-time?) No discussion of classical, jazz, hip-hop/rap, r&b/soul, or The Funk is allow in this thread.
THIS is about the ultimate showdown between rock (AKA rock & roll, rock/metal, etc,) AND dance-pop (AKA post-disco). These 2 music genres has generated the most impact in the history of modern pop culture. But only one of these genres has been more successful than the other. So which one is it?

Rock is the older cousin of dance pop, Rock started as a dance music. Both genres are great but i choose rock because it have more diverse message in the lyrics.

I'm a little confused. If jazz, ragtime, and etc. were all considered to be dance oriented pop at one point, then how come it can't be categorized under the same umbrella as 'dance-pop'?

Because the genre dance-pop (in name) didn't exist until 2 years after the "death" of disco.

Mad late to this thread, but if I have to say...um...well...rock sells better, at least in some countries, but overall dance-pop seems to grown immensely in popularity and hasn't really shown any sign of stopping since the late 70s it seems? Dance-pop spawned a lot of great genres. There's also the entire club and drug culture that has developed from/around it.
I would have to say that in terms of financial success I would go with rock, but in terms of influence and continuing legacy? Dance-pop all the way. Rock may offer more in terms of variety in subject matter, but, ultimately, as long as people continue to want to dance and have a good time, I don't think dance-pop is going to die out anytime soon.
