So Aretha gets a tribute because she's sick (or something) but Teena doesn't get one and she's dead? How insulting to Teena.

I think Aretha's impact on music is waayy more greater than Teena's. Aretha has influenced every modern day female singer (including Teena). She is the last of a dying breed. Mavis is apart of that same category.

No but Teena was a musical pioneer in other ways than Aretha. She might not had enjoyed the same iconic status and certainly did not earn the recognition Aretha has received time and time again, but it would not have killed anyone (not even Aretha) for them to have maybe done like a three artist tribute to her and throw Teena a bone of recognition. Or if they didn't want to touch the Aretha tribute, skip a few minutes from some of the other "tribute" numbers. Was there a reason why Barbara was singing Evergreen? I don't remember if there was. hmmm A little medley done by a blue-eyed soul female singer (representing the doors she opened for those that followed her) and a black R&B singer (representing her immense acceptance and love for her from the black community) would've been just perfect and a lovely send-off. It didn't have to be a big Aretha-sized extravaganza. It was shady and in poor taste IMO, that even after death they didn't care to acknowledge what a loss her passing means.

^ I don't know. I can see it but it's funny how no one knew her before she died, then afterwards, everyone come out of the closet as if they embraced her all this time.

I don't fucking buy it.

You mean the black community? When we went to see Teena Marie, Ron was one of like maybe 10 white people. lol A good 90% was black and folk swooned over her as if she were royalty. Folk have true love for this woman. I've been a Lady T fan since the early 80's and aside from Lovergirl, I don't ever remember hearing her played on a "mainstream" station. I always either heard her on RB stations or saw her on RB shows on tv.

Here's hoping that at least the RB Award shows in the coming year will hold tributes to her.

The R&B community always embraced her by default though there were few exceptions. I was surprised Mary J. said anything. lol

I never heard/read anything non-accepting of her, but of course there's always exceptions. nod

Did Mary J have issue with her?

Yeah if I was to ask early to mid-1990s Mary J. how she felt, she'd probably look at me ignorantly. lol

Random Thoughts:

-RETHA Tribute. Too long. Xtina with the different color mic stand falloff. Get off it already, chubby.

Has Jen Hudson been sending her all the food she stopped eating or what??

Florence was the best part of this tribute.

How about cutting that shit a bit and giving Lady T deserved respect instead of a half-sec shot in the middle during the In Memoriam...and not even give her the fuckin screen to herself. That was some serious bullshit. pissed

-Ricky Martin...first wtf was up with those pants??? Secondly, just cause you finally came out you don't now have to do EVERYTHING that's gay. lol

-Gaga...fuck it Gaga, kill 'em if they hate you. shrug Love the song and the performance was fun. I don't care if it sounds like Express Yourself (I honestly don't hear it that much) or Itsy Bitsy Spider, so the fuck what. Lavaux sounds like Automatic, Fergalicious sounds like Supersonic, Strong Enough sounds like I Will Survive and blahblah fart

-The whole Bruno Mars/Janelle thing was great!

-Justin Beiber and Ben (Usher) Vereen, I hate u both. THANK GAWD I'd accumulated enough on my dvr to skip both your asses.

-Bob Dylan and 28 Hillbillies...I wanteed to kill myself 30 seconds into that whole thing.

Holy shit, you couldn't understand this dude before. Was that just static coming out his mouth??

-Why does Lady Antebellum always make me think of a fab hag going out with her favorite gays? She is too cute.

-Ceelo KA-MF-KAWWWWWWWW! Best of the night. Gwenneth's shoes. love

-Did Katy Perry really need to be strapped in for that? I thought she was gonna try to pull a P!NK lol

[Edited 2/14/11 14:43pm]

Did you see Jaden Smith's pants?! I'm wondering why Will and Jada let him wear them shits to the Grammys. Where the fuck you get leopard print skinny jeans from?! Yes John, I'm really upset about this lol

Ricky's pants, Jaden's pants and let's not forget that really.....umm.....special convo between Beiber and Usher was rose the zest levels to feverpitch

Thats so true, so many people all of a sudden were die hard fans, and though it wasnt the same on that level, it kind of was that way with Rick James too, though he was wider known, you had all these people that were lifelong fans and yet you never ever heard them praise him when he was living. Its the old saying Love me in Life not in Death.....I mean why do we "gather" for the day LENNON was killed and not born???

The artists of the past decades have gotten a lot of new fans recently because of the internet. Rick James & Teena Marie type of artists that didn't even have many of their CDs available in stores (I hardly ever saw anything by them in a record store in the 90s). It's the P2P networks and youtube type of streaming services that allowed people to find about their stuff. It doesn't explain all the "commemorative hype", but that's one aspect of it.

Prints

I didn't like:

  • Bruno Mars' second song, his voice is too weak to sing a decent soul song live. Janelle was OK
  • Of course Justin Bieber is wack, but I guess they want younger audience for Grammy Awards and this show had best ratings in 11 years
  • Katy Perry can't of course hit the high notes, she will never be great live singer

Good moments:

  • Mick Jagger - close to 70 and rocking strong!!
  • Eminem, Dre + Rhianna - at least I didn't fall asleep, because it was 4AM in Europe as I was watching the show
  • Cee-lo and Gwyneth duet was nice, she's a quite ok singer
  • Norah Jones sounded good
  • Gaga was song has a hit potential and she delivered it well

I agree with you for sure, but in the eyes of NARAS, Teena was not as influential as Aretha. Now, if BET Honors, NAACP Awards, or Soul Train awards avoid giving her a proper tribute, I will have a major problem, but the Grammy's I don't have a problem...mostly because I understand how they are.

now, "funeral", that's always over way too soon, i could listen to that album on repeat for the

Post of the year! biggrin

.

well i also think that 'funeral' is better than the 'suburbs album' but they have released some of the best music this decade....i am very happy that they have the recognition they deserve....
