4 Those of U Who Doubted Justin's R&B Status...

Well, the sky is falling! Read on:

Timberlake Nabs Soul Train Award Nominations
Mon Feb 3, 4:10 PM ET Add Entertainment - Reuters/Variety Music to My Yahoo!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pre-teens may be tiring of pop idols like Britney Spears (news) and the Backstreet Boys (news - web sites), but it seems the R&B community is waking up to Justin Timberlake (news).

The 'N Sync singer on Monday picked up two Soul Train Music Award nominations, the only white performer to get a mention.

Rookie soul divas Ashanti and Amerie led the contenders with three nominations each, while Timberlake was among four acts to earn two apiece, the others being singers Musiq and Nelly, British soul duo Floetry and urban boy band B2K.

Winners will be announced during the 17th annual Soul Train Awards, which will air live on March 1 from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Timberlake's debut solo album, "Justified," has sold nearly 2 million copies after 12 weeks in release. He will compete for the R&B/soul album (male) prize against Gerald Levert's "The G Spot," Jaheim's "Still Ghetto" and Musiq's "Juslisen."

Timberlake and Musiq also will face off for the R&B/soul single (male) prize, with their respective tunes "Like I Love You" and "Dontchange" competing against Maxwell's "This Woman's Work" and Usher's "U Don't Have To Call."

Timberlake's chances of victory are not good though: the last time a white act won a Soul Train award was in 1998, when Boney James was honored in the since-discontinued jazz category. 'N Sync received a nomination last year.

Ashanti won two prizes at the American Music Awards last month and has received five Grammy nominations. Her self-titled debut album has sold 3.2 million copies after 43 weeks. Amerie's debut, "All I Have," has sold about 500,000 copies in six months.

Didn't the Soul Train Awards give Ashanti some kind of Aretha Franklin Award?

R&B doesn't mean the same as it once did.now when George Michael was Nomiated&Won I was feeling that but Justin TImberlake ain't no GM He is more Andrew Rigely overall IMHO with a couple catchy Sounding songs.and Don Cornielious Gets the Gas Face for not dropping them Class Old Soul Train Episodes on VIdeo&DVD.the SHow is Fixed like the rest of them.

Funny you should mention that, I was just thinking about George Michael. He even had his debut album hit #1 on the R&B charts. With George I always got the feeling that he cut his teeth on R&B (long before his duets with Mary J. Blige and Aretha), and it never came off as posing as a wannabe soul man, or something beyond his grasp.

I'm not sure about that Justin guy when it comes to his solo stuff.

yep."Carless Whisper" got R&B Play back in 85&folks bought into His thing without Him trying to lay it on about His Roots&Music leanings. He just let His Voice&Talent do the talking&I Apllaud Him for that still.when he did that Motown show a tribute show back in 85 singing with Smokey Robinson He just did His thing.I have alot of Respect for George Michael as a Singer&Songwriter.

Soul Train/Don Cornelius knows how to play the publicity game. They nominated Justin Timberlake because they knew it would get media attention and increase the ratings for the show.

They have no intention of actually giving Justin Timberlake a Soul Train award.

Exactly! There is nothing "soulful" about Justin Timberlake and his music. He is just a second rate boy band/pop singer posing as a Michael Jackson wannabee. He works with all the "trendy" R&B and hip-hop producers in his bid to gain street credibility. But he fails big time, imo. His vocals are dry and soul-less,and his music sounds like everything else on the radio right now.

George Michael,on the other hand, made genuinely soulful music and it wasn't "gimmicky" the way Justin is.The 'Faith' album went Number One on the R&B charts and it deserved to,as it was one of the most soulful albums of 1987.Hell,"Careless Whisper" is more soulful than anything Justin has done.

I hope that Amerie wins for all her nominations, because she is an incredible singer and I thought that her debut album was amazing. I think Ashanti is talented but way overrated, especially coming out only last year.

Go Amerie!

Haters!!! Haters!!! Haters!!!

Leave Justin alone!!

Because I've been tortured in my life to have to listen to "teenie bop" music because I have pre-teen in my house, I've LEARNED to try to like some of these folks.

I still hate Ashanti! She just sucks! But I'll give Justin a little love for effort. The cd isn't bad.

Leave that white boy alone...please ya'll know Justin has a soft spot for the sista's. Maybe he'll get some at the awards.

lol...what's funny to me is that, just a few short years ago when Justin was with N'Sync, everybody was going on and on about how much he sucks, but now that he has made a solo CD,folks are NOW acting like he's the best thing in pop music right now.I don't get it.He still sounds as vapid and soul-less as he did with the other four dummies singing with him...lol...

How can anyone compare GM to Justin Timberlake??? George Michael is a talented person, (I'm not saying Timberlake isn't!!).. And when GM was nomiated&won with the album FAITH, I thought it was a little.. I mean.. no offence, but how much R&B is there in GM's music?? not much in my opinion..

I disagree.George's 'Faith' album is a very soulful recording.Songs like "Hard Day" and "I Want Your Sex" could almost be considered funk. And ballads like "Father Figure" and "One More Try" are very R&B-flavored,which is why these songs received MAJOR airplay on Black radio stations.

I think they're okay, but when I think about R&B, the first songs that pops into my head is definitley not any of Gm's songs!!! You're right they're soulful, but I wouldn't consider them as R&B.. but he won the awards didn't he? wink

Yeah,I believe he did win the Award that year,if I'm not mistaken.I also recall singer Freddie Jackson making a big fuss about the fact that 'Faith' was the Number One R&B album. He said "well, just wait until MY new album comes out"...lol...you could tell that he was really jealous smile
