Prince has one of the best voices in the industry too -- doesn't mean shit if:

- People grow tired of you

- Nobody cares about what you're writing

- Your fanbase become so (ex: gay/black/adolescent/etc) that others (ex: straight/white/adult/etc) can't relate

The irony in people discrediting Lady Gaga's vocal ability on a Prince site is delicious.

Meaning? Prince may not be Luther Vandross or someone, but he can sing and unlike Gaga, he has a unique, instantly recognizable voice. He also has one of the best falsetto's in the biz and a diverse range.

As far as Gaga is concerned, it's not about being a "hater". She does have talent. But she's the one saying she has one of the greatest voices in the industry and perhaps considering the lack of talent in the business these days, that could be true.

But to say Lady Gaga is a great vocalist or on the level of Christina Aguilera is completely laughable. Lady Gaga is an okay singer. She could never pull off a song like "Impossible" or "Walk Away" like Christina A. She just doesn't have the vocal chops for it.

Her voice sounds the same on every song anyway. She doesn't have great range or a unique tone at all. She is certainly not one of the greatest singers. I don't know who some of you Gaga fans are listening too, but when I listen to Gaga, I hear a singer who is a bit above average, but that's it.

Gaga's voice=A dime a dozen. I'll go to any karaoke bar or turn on American Idol and hear a million singers who sound just like her.

A generic vocalist if i've heard one.

Prince qualifies for all 3 of those things, though.

She needs to qualify this statement for me. What industry is she referring to? The white Pop/Dance industry? Clearly, from a musical standpoint (as she stated) she cannot mean the music industry that includes these singers:

Ledisi

Leela James

Erykah Badu

Jill Scott

Chrisette Michele

Lalah Hathaway

Adriana Evans

And though I am not necessarily a fan of these singers:

Jennifer Hudson

Fantasia

Beyonce

Finally, from a white Pop/Dance standpoint Xtina has her faded as well.

Oh, and how on Earth could I forget ADELE. Now that woman can sing, and she writes great songs.

I think she sings great. And performers need to be confident in themselves. Do I think she's the greates, or one of the greatest....NO WAY! No one is "the greatest." It's all subjective in this topic. Mostly personal preference. There's too many variables in "performing" to make a claim like thiat.

I think most performers need to tell themselves this in private...what's tacky is too anounce it publicly.

Confidence biggrin

Arrogance sad

Hmmm? Why did you crossout Erykah? I think she is one of the most interesting artists of this era whether you dig her style or not.

I think the has a great voice, especially if you have ever seen her live. It is unique and has range. Additionally, her songwriting lyrically and musically is far more creative and interesting than Lady Gaga. Finally, I think that Erykah is more authentically eccentric than Lady Gaga whose whole "Look at me, I'm so different and weird" schitck seems so forced and put on.

I agree that Tamia has a great voice, but her music and style are about as boring as it gets.

She's got a very perfunctory voice, a little better than Madonna certainly, but absolutely ZERO distinctive about it

Gaga is a great talent, but I hate her production. And the music is not at all that outstanding. It's super trendy, not forward thinking at all. Her piano and singing skills are great though. She is good at hiding her talents with the total package of over produced euro dance club beats and funky costumes.

I think what people aren't realizing is that Gaga holds back a lot, vocally.

I chose the particular song I did - the acoustic of Pokerface - to make a point. If you listen to it, there's points where she does start really belting the song, but she doesn't do it for the entire duration. I think that's true of a lot of her work; that she holds back, but don't confuse that with having a weak voice or think that means she's unable to go there vocally, because she can.

I think if Gaga really just said "Fuck it" and took on "At Last" or some of those other big songs, she could hold her own. And it's not that I'm pro-Gaga and anti-Christina or anything like that. I have a shitload of respect for Christina's talent and I actually think the backlash she's been getting lately is unjustified and fucked up.

So it's not that I'm saying one trumps the other vocally or that I'm turning this into a 'vs' thing. I'm saying that Gaga is way more vocal chops than alot of people realize or give her credit for - again, along the lines of someone like Christina Aguilera.

That is why she holds back - she does rigorous dance moves throughout MOST of her performances on tour. At the show I saw on the Monster Ball tour, she only ever stood still for 1 song.

Can't say that about anyone else. At all.

I love her cojones in saying that, it's a very Kanye move. Kind of pointless to debate the veracity of it though, she's got rabid fans as well as haters - how to be truly objective about it? Does it come down to a pop vs. R&B thing? In some ways it's too soon to really say if she's one of the best, but there has been some growth from the first cd to the second in terms of songwriting and her live performances (in terms of singing as well or better than the cd) are generally impressive.

Well, she sounded nice saying Oh Eh Eh Oh shrug

That clip is nothing compared to what Xtina does when she's in her element and not screaming like a rabid clown. It's laughable that you would even compare her to Xtina as a singer. There's a reason why Gaga hides behind all the flashy costumes and dramatic make-up, you know?

this back and forth is reminding me of a early 80's track suit ridden dance club dance-off.
