They were a bit similar but most of Rick's ballads are pretty killer.

The one Rick James song I do not like. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer.

HA! This is one of my all time favorite Rick songs--and I have many! P.S. Hope Rick & Teena are grooving together in a better place than this! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

The song and video will also take me back to a special time and place, sitting up on a friday night with the vhs tape ready to tape all the new videos on Friday Night Videos, back when the show was 90 minutes and NO HOSTS, just videos, no fucking cosby kids or fresh prince cast members etc...And even better was that this song could chart along side younger artists and older artists on a top 100, sad these times will never be so FREE again. I've never liked this song either, lol. And was never crazy about Smokey Robinson; beyond "Tears of a Clown", and maybe "The Tracks of My Tears". "Ebony Eyes" feels to me like they were trying too hard to "sang it!". This song is so boring to me, I can't even fall asleep to it, lol. Though I recognize it was well written, produced and executed. Nevertheless, regardless of what I think, it was a HIT.

I may get crucified for saying this but I think I know what you mean. Obviously as a songwriter he was definitely one of the best of his generation but as a performer I find him a little boring, particularly after the '60s. He just seems a little too laid back and bland. Fantastic songwriter, so-so performer.

Again, why can't they play "this" in Cracker Barrel.

The first time I ever heard this song was on "Everybody Hates Chris", when Chris lip-sang it to some girl in a fantasy sequence.
It's a great song, Rick could sing anybody under the table. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

This video is hilarious to me. I don't know why but whenever I see it I chuckle. I think of it as the Black response to Gilligan's Island.

I would never slam an artist just to be mean, or without supporting my case.
Smokey is one of the greats, and I recognize that fact. And like you said, pre-70's Smokey was more in his element, I feel. But after those early days, Smokey has bored me to tears. Plus, I remember seeing a documentary about him way back when I was little, and while I can't remember the exact content in it that caught my attention, something in that story sorta turned me off to him. I honestly can't remember what it was I learned about him way back then, but I started seeing him differently, not in a good way.
But for better or worse (as a performer), this particular song never grabbed me. And Rick added nothing to it, in my opinion; his vocals here were over the top - and I'm a HUGE Rick James fan.

Don't steal my ballad thunder. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I wouldn't dare, lol.
If you love it, by all means; continue to LOVE IT! In fact, love it even more to make up for the lack of my part, lol. Trust me, I love TONS of other stuff that folks slam on a regular (...like every single song on Rick's last 2 CD's).
Just keeping it real from my perspective, while adding flavor to the civil conversation.

Everybody know how I feel about Smokey. It's Rick's song anyways.

Lord, you sure took me back! I must have at least 20 VHS tapes on which I recorded individual videos doing just what you did!! I must have had a really boring life then---that added up to hours and hours!! LOL Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

I like Smokey but with the exception of 'Quiet Storm',I find his solo albums to be kinda boring.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The Quiet Snooze. Go to Cracker Barrel . . . you'd have a nervous breakdown.
There something about Smokey that's off puttting, I don't know. Maybe it's when he says "Motown Is A Family" I wanna gagg.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I would agree. And there's something about him that doesn't "reach" me.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The only solo songs I dug from Smoke was "Baby Come Close" and "Cruisin'". I didn't like "Quiet Storm"...for some odd reason. And everything else:
I think what turned me off on him was his defense (sometimes too much) of how Motown handled their artists. We know Motown was kinda shady (not to the point of mobs coming into the picture but they sure had their artists on leases and gave them salaries - which didn't make sense later on).
His best stuff was with the Miracles and as a songwriter and producer. They brought out the best in him and the singers who sung his songs definitely made them smashes (Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, especially the Temptations). Without them, he was just another peg in the Motown machine IMHO.
