This version, not Rod's. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

this actually IS better than the stewart version!!! but i can't listen to the song though, without thinking of 'taj mahal' by jorge ben jor, since stewart stole the track from him. i just watched the 'live' version of tiny tim doing the song. wow.
i can't think of tiny tim without thinking of him singing 'the ice caps are melting, yo ho ho ho...'

It's one of those tunes that seems ridiculously naive in these days when you have nine-year-olds singing about getting their swag on, but it's so mercilessly catchy you have to like it, and that video makes me smile. It was Island Records' first big hit, too (Chris Blackwell produced it), and the world outside Jamaica's first taste of ska, so I guess it's part of a whole interesting chapter of music history. (That's my defence, anyway! "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin
