I like a few of the bands you mentioned, but real industrial to me is music like Einstürzende Neubauten's Strategies Against Architecture 80-83 when they are banging away with tools and drills and stuff.

See those guy's are good and i guess they could be considered real industrial.
But i like the bon crunching metal and synth sensibilities of the late 80's and 90's industrial bands.
But i have not seen a good industrial band post 2000
To me industrial died along with grunge int he late 90's Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

was(not was) was influenced by some of those sounds:
it could be said that michael was also influenced by those sounds...

i gotta say, if reznor worked with michael, that might have been SICK! [Edited 2/8/11 0:31am]

i saw meat beat manifesto years ago, probably 1990 or so, when they were on tour for this album... i went deaf for three days after that. it was a great show. more house than industrial, but they still got pulled in with a lot of the 'industrial' groups.

Yeah - if MJ let TR just do whatever he wanted and didn't give him a list of demands/fence him in creatively, in any way.
The stuff on Dangerous sounds a lot similar to the stuff on Year Zero. "Jam" and "Vessel", for instance. A lof of the YZ stuff sounds like Dangerous on steroids lol. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

It's been said that both MJ and Prince were big NIN fans.... Prince used to drive around with the "Broken" EP in his car stereo and a couple of MJ's engineers said he always listened to "The Downward Spiral".
Anyway, big industrial fan here.... NIN, Ministry, Throbbing Gristle, Pigface.....actually Martin Atkins from Pigface is a friend of mine... |

Pigface has some good stuff i believe they did some stuff with Rob Halford from Judas Priest. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I'm a big fan of this genre, but I agree with sextonseven on the name/definition. The groups you're speaking of here are either EBM (Electronic Body Music) or Industrial Rock. In fact, I believe one of the members of 242 actually came up with the EBM title. True Industrial was/is groups like Einstürzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. The groups that took from that sound made it more accessible, ending up with either a more danceable sound (EBM or Industrial Dance) or more rock sound (hence, later Ministry and NIN). Those have spawned even more sub-genres (too many to mention). I'm a big fan of Front Line Assembly, Front 242, Ministry (81-92), Skinny Puppy, Meat Beat Manifesto (althought I'd hesitate to place MBM in one of these genres -- Jack Dangers is more of his own genre). These days I tend to like pretty much anything on Metropolis Records -- it's like the modern version of what Wax Trax or 4AD were back in the day (labels that had a specific sound).

Very cool, Militant! He's been around the Industrial Rock scene for many years. He's worked with PIL, Killing Joke, NIN, Ministry, Murder, Inc., The Damage Manual and obviously Pigface. My first exposure to him was through Killing Joke (huge fan).

NIN is true industrial as well.
Check out "19 Ghosts II" , for instance.
That aside, even the more mainstream-sounding stuff by NIN has a lot of industrial sounds going on in it along with the pianos and guitar. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

this is my favourite version of this song- she added dub elements:
the best one, obviously (after to me, ms. jones):
rezner, peter murphy and crew covering the O.G.:
and of course, ministry straight jacking the song:
hee hee... i was a big ministry head back in the day.

i stopped listening to nine inch nails after i saw some stuff that gave me nightmares... like that dude bound and gagged under the toilet. and the snuff films and stuff. the imagery was to painful, and listening to it would give me associations.
but, here's some early footage with him.

A few faves (in a "loose genre"):
Static X Sevendust Type O Negative Filter Sevendust Attack Attack!! Test Dept Powerman 500
and maybe a slight honorable mention (as they only crossed the "Industrial line" in moments) to Portishead. Funk Is It's Own Reward

i'm from brooklyn, so i knew some of those guys, or have met them through the folks i knew... like the type o negative dudes. the singer guy, pete steele, he transcended last year as well.

Yeah..that;s why I say it's a "loose" genre....there's a lot of bands that could be thought of as another, while still having some "industrial" elements. Funk Is It's Own Reward

Yep. I initially knew of him through NIN (most notably the "Suck" track) and then discovered other acts he'd been involved with like KJ, Damage Manual, etc. Here's a pic of me and him! --> http://twitgoo.com/3h839
He wrote a really good book a couple of years ago called Tour:Smart which is basically the bible for touring bands. I've written an article myself that's going to be included in the followup book which will be titled "Band:Smart". He's a really cool guy, very knowledgeable and down to earth. He does lots of events, music industry conventions etc. If you ever get the opportunity to go to one I would recommend it.
