Jackson 5 ~ Star Spangled Banner

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

i remember the first time i saw this, some years ago... i IMMEDIATELY said, wait- michael never sang this ever again in his adulthood. i also noticed that when STEVIE WONDER sang it, he did NOT sing the 'bombs bursting in air' part... they also sang 'lift ev'rey voice and sing'.

word to the badd... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! he totally tried to backtrack on that. he was pissed because michael took teddy riley from him or whatever. the thing is, you settle that privately. you don't release some crappy song about family. you just don't do that. i mean, michael could write TOMES on what his family did to him. but he chose to remain quiet (in public) about it. he let out SOME things, but he wasn't all like jermaine, randy and them.

i think what jermaine did, like everything else in that movie, was for dramatic license. i don't think he did his kid brother justice at all in the 'american dream'. there were a lot of inconsistencies in that movie. as was in that one 'man in the mirror' movie, directed by allan moyle. one of the WORST movies i have seen in my life.

2004 was a madtv comedy skit in disguise lol it was too stupid to watch in full, and the "concert clips' they created were joke and full of jungle animal moves, not mj moves.

And actually, Monkey Business is about his family and their disgusting behaviour. Janet even wrote a song about her dad, You Need Me, but neither made it on Rhythm Nation and Dangerous. In fact, Janet's record company wanted the follow up to Control to be called Scandal and be about the family. They wanted to cash in on the bashing and even the Latoya drama I'm sure.

Jermaine's original version was not about Michael, but then the bashing version "leaked" and was just a demo, though done in very poor taste.

ah, monkey business... it's been said that 'superfly sister' was about la toya. michael's written songs about his life before more often than not; the thing is, they were disguised in some way and left up to discussion. 'word to the badd' was pointedly about jermaine's brother. michael never released a song that said, "my family did this to me'. he never named names like that.

latoya even called out her brother a whole lot, saying he molested kids, that he did not have vitiligo or whatever. these people need to shut their mouths.

wait, didn't the version where he talked about michael leak on the radio, then he backtracked then released the other version?

all i'm saying is that michael could have went in on his father. he could have went in on jermaine, on everybody, but he didn't do that. he was too private. but when those 'glenda' tapes leaked... whoo boy. he kind of went in. i can only imagine all the stuff he's said that DIDN'T leak.

oh yeah! the dodgers satdium scene in that 'man in the mirror' movie... a joke. and the dude they got to play michael. ???????????????????

the casting was horrendous. i actually wrote an essay on the film.

Why would he? The brothers weren't supposed to be singing it in the 1st place, since they were Jehovah's Witnesses at the time. They didn't know the song and learned it on the way. They weren't supposed to be singing Christmas songs either, but they had no choice of what they recorded at Motown though.

[Edited 2/7/11 7:37am]

The non michael one was for the album, but he recorded the other version and that ended up on the radio...I read about the fight in jermaine's wife margaret's book or somewhere between michael and jermaine and how jermaine wrote that in response to michael not returning his calls and cause of the producers, but this version got on the radio....I didn't think of this before, but do you suppose michael had anything to do with this as publicity for black or white? I know he doesn't need to do this cause he's talented, but you never know.

A lot of fans also overlook that latoya was saying mj didn't do anything at first, and then she changed her tone in that overseas interview after jack gordon threatened her and she was mad at her parents. Most think she just started doing it the minute the allegations broke and that's why they hate her, but she was a victim of domestic abuse.

and LMAO I wish I could read the essay, that movie was awful

i can send you the essay... i wrote it in a blog site i have. ironically, i wrote the piece shortly before 25 june 2009... i can send you the link in the private notes here... then you can let me know if you got it. i'm sure there's stuff in it i ether changed my mind about or am wrong on, but the basic gist is: THE MOVIE IS HORRENDOUS.

the other issue i have with jermaine is that he was THISCLOSE to raping his ex-wife (with the children around) but hazel bit him or something). i was speaking to someone about this a while ago, and she remembers the reportage of that. i am VERY skeptical of jermaine- i think his taking of the name muhammad abdul aziz (even though ANOTHER man with that name is not so holy either- check for the saudi royal family) and his practise of islam is insulting.

i think jermaine is guided not by goodness in his heart. he is guided by money, and other forces. again, if michael was not returning his calls, he felt the need to retaliate in THAT way? grow up, jermaine.

i have actually heard the theory that the jermaine issue was a possibility for the 'black or white' promotion; but i think michael had a bigger trick up his sleeve, with the second half of that video. i don't really think he was thinking about jermaine in relation to promotion. i think jermaine's ego was wounded, and decided to do that song. and it backfired. because you don't call out family like that. the nws about the second half of 'black or white' overshadowed ANYTHING about jermaine.

and you're totally right, la toya DID say he was innocent at first. then she had that dreadful press confrence or whatever in insrael. i like la toya... my heart goes out to her. she's been through things. but still, sh said things about her brother, where she gets the side eye.

she also was gonna come out with the statement that her brother was molested by joe, but michael was gonna come out and sue her if she wrote that. so she left it out of the book. i have the book. she spends most of it saying michael is great, michael is great. she does talk about abuse, but not as bad as it could have been. i think michael spoke about his abuse in clearer detail than la toya. la toya seemed to speak about it in despiration, like she was trying to escape. i don't think she had anywhere to go, she, like michael lived such a sheltered life for so long. in many ways, she still is.

i think she should be silent too, until she comes out with some clear information. because she doesn't it's easy to discredit her. i like her... i know a lot of the fan base doesn't.

This is starting to turn into the MJ sticky thread. lol That's why I never go in there, I'm not interested in gossip. It's also why I hardly go to MJJC anymore.

i agree with you. but michael sang 'thriller' in his adulthood, amongst other songs, when he was still deep in the JW culture. i think, at least in my opinion, michael was not into the culture the song speaks about. and he was pretty open about his distrust of the values of this country, especially after his court dates.

hee hee... wow. i don't consider this stuff so much gossip. i'm more into the technical stuff- the foundations of the art, etc. but that's difficult to find on sites like this it seems. i have seen some of that stuff though. but, as i said somewhere else, i'll discuaa michael anywhere, as long as it's constructive.

The song is basically celebrating a battle in a war against the British.

I say one thing about that performance, contrast to the smiling faces the acting Jacksons were in performing it (in a DIFFERENT KEY whofarted ), the real life Jacksons' faces looked smug like "we gotta sing this shit? confused " lol You could tell Michael wasn't really feeling it: "AND THE ROCKETS' RED GLARE, BOMBS BURSTING IN AIR rolleyes "

that was my point: "you could tell michael wasn't really feeling it". which is why i mentioned something about him not doing it in adulthood. not to mention the fact that his view of america was so much different as be became an adult. people underestimate michael's political voice (one of the reasons i love HIStory and dangerous so much is because he started to use it more often).

i know they didn't... again though, when people sing it i am curious if they know the context and history of the song... and if not (adults anyway), why would they sing a song which so obviously glorifies war? especially when they speak of being anti-war? i liked how STEVIE did 'lift ev'ry voice and sing', and he himself din't sing the 'bombs bursting in air' part. that made me smile.

You know what I like about interpretations of this stupid song? lol It puts the song in a different light. The way Jimi Hendrix did it in the middle of Vietnam War, protests around the country and the 1960s civil rights movement, he took the song to a VERY DARK CORNER but in the end it meant something different. Jose's version was more tragic than triumphant (which is why people didn't really dig it) With Marvin Gaye, it was solemn and not at all commending the U.S. It was as if he was saying "oh really? This is what this country stands for?", that kind of thing. Least to me it was. That's why people got mad at them doing their own versions of it because it didn't stand for what they thought it was.
