Linda Perry

I wanted to have a thread dedicated to this awesome woman

Besides the fact i love 4 Non blondes one album, Linda also of course wrote stuff for Pink Xtinas beautiful and other hits

But she also has a great solo output, she is an incredibly talented musician and way underrated

Anyone else a fan?

In the 1970s Linda Perry would have been one of the biggest stars in music. But she just never had the right image to stay on top in the MTV driven 1990s. So I’m happy that she found success as a producer/songwriter.

Me to! she is fantastic if she was in the 70's or 60's she would have had top 40 hits everywhere

LP did the majority of Courtney's post Celebrity Skin work. America's Sweetheart is all LP and Nobody's Daughter was begun as How Dirty Girls Get Clean w/ LP.

Linda is/was actually a friend of mine. We met while going to Gay clubs in the early 80's...she dated a few girls I knew. She even wrote the song "Fruitloop Daydream" about her days in San Diego. On Sundays, we would go to the gay section of Balboa Park, and drink wine coolers and cruise around the loop. She always had her guitar with her, and she'd play for us. Then she moved to San Francisco, and next thing U know...her video is everywhere! I'm really proud of her success.

If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Don't blame Linda. America's Sweetheart was a disaster because Courtney was on drugs. But even with that, it had some good songs. I love Almost Golden and Uncool.

The original demos she did with Courtney, How Dirty Girls Get Clean, were great. If Courtney had released that instead of Nobody's Daughter, it would have been much better received. I still listen to those demos, but I never listen to ND itself.

I think Courtney caused her own creative downfall.

The funny thing is that "Uncool" was not written by LP and "Almost Golden" was pieced together by Courtney's then-boyfriend/manager Jim Barber from incomplete song ideas that arose during the rehearsals in the chateau space they rented on the French riviera to make the album.

You're right about one thing though - if CLove had stuck to the HDGG concept and released her Blood on the Tracks record, it would've been oodles more interesting than the piece of shit record we got in the end (which only had, in the end, 1 complete LP composition - the rest being contributed in the demo stages).

Yeah Hole's material dropped after Linda got ahold of it. confused She has written some good songs here and there but she doesn't really pique my interest.

I actually don't think the songs on Nobody's Daughter were that bad. The main problem for me was her voice. It sounded so horrible. It was so raspy and off key. Her voice was so much better on the demo's. But once the demos leaked out, it was pointless to release the album in any form. It takes away all the excitement of getting a new album from your favorite artist.

I think Courtney is one of those people who needs a band to bounce ideas off of and to contribute musical riffs. As a solo artist she is bound to fail. The new "Hole" wasn't a true band like the original Hole no matter what Courtney said.

The demos leaking didn't bother ME, as a fan. I would've definitely bought the record if it came out mastered clean and sounding professional, etc. Like a record would. Songs like "Car Crash" and "Sunset Marquis" should've gotten a true release. I don't think Courtney is terribly interesting on her own. I find that she isn't TOO talented in the studio and her aesthetic, unchecked, devolves into songs like "Loser Dust" (esp the demo, barf) or "Zeplin Song". It's like, nobody needs that trying-too-hard, bratty attitude anymore! But I think she always will try to appease the riot grrrl in her.

Linda Perry helped give her the opportunity to slow down and listen more to the music she was making, I guess. She seems much more technical nowadays than before. But she helped make the worst material of CLove's career with absolutely insufficient positive results. sad

I just love Sunset Marquis and Car Crash. They actually are my favorite songs by anyone in a long time. I think that's the direction Courtney should go: rock but not hard, more melodic. The heavier hard rock thing was great in the 90's but that style doesn't work now.

But I have a soft spot for Loser Dust. It had that nostalgic 70's punk thing. Courtney writes great lyrics, but she needs a lot of help with the actual music.
