Question for SERIOUS Stevie fans

Ok, first off if you were wondering Stevie WHO, please exit the thread now...

I confess apart from Skeletons, Jungle Fever, ATTL, and Conversation Peace, i only own the box set (At The Turn of The Century), now it DOES have 70 songs on it!! but gems like Loves In Need or My Eyes Don't Cry (the latter i'm good on not hearing ever again honestly, it was a hustle staple for years here in the D), but I'm curious as to what are the MUST have/hear album tracks on his earlier releases, particularly his 70s output that are NOT on the box set. I'll start adding the albums one by one i guess. thanks

Honestly, I'd just break down & buy these outright...no need to go track by track as they are pretty solid (seriously). From his "genius" period:

Talking Book

Fulfillingness' First Finale

Music Of My Mind

Innervisions

Songs In The Key Of Life (essential for ANYONE who loves music)

Hotter Than July

That's the best of Stevie, IMO...although there remain gems on still yet more albums. Just an astonishing body of work. Good luck & ENJOY!!!

I listened to SINTKOL the other night (on vinyl)...start to finish. I just kept shaking my head.

THIS was his "victory lap" after layin the preceeding 4-5 joints on us......who DOES that????? I mean really...in the history of popular music......THAT was some next level shit.

Boggles the mind....from conception, to musicality, to diversity, to raw talent & artistry. It's frighteningly gorgeous even 35 years on. One musical "fastball" after another....never slips.

Essential.

STEVIE WONDER is my favourite artist of all times (besides michael)... hmmmm... i would ALSO say all of his albums. well, at least 'where i'm coming from' to 'a time to love' and all in between. the only one i think is iffy is 'the woman in red'. other than that i love them ALL!!!

i concur. STEVIE WONDER IS THE GREATEST ARTIST TO EVER WALK THE FACE OF THE PLANET. i have all those 45's from 'stevie at the beach', etc. but i would say my two favourite albums of his are 'fulfillingness' first finale' and 'secret life of plants'. if i HAD to choose any. i love 'a time to love', 'jungle fever', 'conversation peace', 'in square circle', all of the later ones. 'the woman in red' is the only one i give STEVIE the side eye to... the songs individually are actually decent (ecept 'it's more than you', written by ben bridges) but collectively, it's a mess.

For a while now but Stevie always announces/delays stuff again. But he's working on a Gospel album "Gospel Inspired by Lula" and an album called "Through The Eyes Of Wonder". But then again...who knows...He been talking about those albums for four years or so. Fulfillingsness First Finale (originally a double album) as well as Conversation Peace (two seperate albums one spelled conversation piece one spelled conversation peace) as well as Characters (characters part II released a while after characters) were all gonna be more than one project.

This got played alot when I was a little kid in my house but then in the 80s Stevie had kind of a corny reputation so I didn't hear SITKOL in a long time. When I was flatting, I raided a friends collection and found this. I remember sitting there completely stunned at the awesomeness of this album and it was like hearing my very young childhood again.

I got to see him live a couple of years ago, had such a good time.

Great list of albums. Stevie is the best male vocalist IMHO.

That's my favorite album of all time. It's one of those albums that you have to listen from start to finish. It's a 'complete' masterpiece that must be appreciated as a whole. This is the type of mindblowing album that every artist should strive to make at least once in their careers.

This is an easy question to answer:

Music of My Mind

Talking Book

Innervisions

Fullfillingness' First Finale

Songs In the Key of Life

Hotter Than July

If you are looking for his absolute best this is it. I wouldn't dive into anything earlier or later until you got the good stuff. There are some good songs on his post Hotter Than July albums but they are not even close to the same league as his '70s albums.

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Songs In the Key of Life. I've always felt that it was a bit overrated. It's a great album but I would take any two of the above albums other than Hotter Than July over Songs In the Key of Life.

Seeing as you have the box set, you're only missing one track from Innervisions (Jesus Children of America)

But it's one of the album's best tracks... they should've found a way to squeeze it on there.

Anything from Where I'm Coming From to Hotter Than July is absolutely essential. You're also missing "Front Line" from Musiquarium.

Indeed. There is some great work on Signed Sealed Delivered as well, even though it's more Motown-ish..You can tell something was upcoming...

I'm a huge Stevie fan though...I have all of his songs, rarities, outakes etc. Sitting at like 1000 something.

Where I'm Coming From, Music of my Mind, Innvervisions, Talking Book, Fulfingness First Finale, Songs in the Key of Life and Hotter Than July are all worth getting. I'd also add 'In Square Circle' too although the box set has 'Overjoyed', 'Part Time Lover' and 'Go Home'. I like 'Whereabouts', 'Stranger on the Shore of Love', 'Never In Your Sun' and 'I Love You Too Much' from Square Circle.

That's cool and very impressive. Is your Stevie Wonder music cataloged & organized? My brother and I have been discussing creating a website where people could post a comprehensive listing of any practicular artist, band, or label they are passionate about and have a complete discography . . give or take a 45 or album missing here or there. You may be interested. biggrin I'll let you know when we've figured it all out.

thanks guys, i appreciate the more specific feedback you offered! i KNOW Stevie is all that and his 4-6 album arc from the 70s is incredible, i was just wondering what tracks i HAD to have/hear. the bulk of those albums are on the box set, so i just wanted to know about tracks like Front Line and Jesus Children... (the latter i've heard). i don't want to just start COLLECTING per se (although i will...). i think the motown-ish (down to earth/where i'm coming from) stuff i will get later though.
