wait that's the exact same production, with just the vocals added and horns added. When was this put out? I thought they wrote it and produced it with him.

It's the demo version. Andre Harris produced the demo. Michael added the strings. Marsha was also singing with Michael on the actual track. Hear her near the end of the song. She also re-sings the beginning part that she sings on the demo.

Butterflies was originally song by Floetry.

MJ loved the song so much he covered it.

I thought it was weird. 2 artists, releasing the same song, around the same time.

But who's going to tell the king of pop NO.

Not entirely correct.

The song was written by Andre Harris & Marsha from Floetry and recorded as a demo - and pitched to Michael. Michael love it, and worked with them to add a few elements to it.

Michael's version (technically the original) was released on Invincible in 2001.

Floetry released their demo version on Floetic in late 2002 - a year later.

Both versions are wonderful.

And I love Michael's vocal performance on this one of his finest on that album and one of the best songs on that album by far.

butterflies is one of michael's greatest songs in all of his musical career... and that is saying a lot for me, because it's hard for me to choose. i don't like EVERYTHING michael released, but i love most of it. and this is definitely one of the ones at the top. 'speechl;ess' is probably my favourite on the album, as it's the most bare.

Though i love butterflies, for some reason, it was never one of the best of his career ever to me, and I didn't quite get all the hype when it came out

when i first heard the song, i think i was cleaning my house or something. i was like, is that michael??!! i fell in love with the song. i didn't get the album until later, and i fell in love with the song even more.

aw cute lol I think my mom was surprised it was recent too when she heard it in 2009 from a cheap mixed cd she picked up full of michael (I was like, what a waste, I could have burned you a cd), and thought it was really old.

yeah, it does indeed have a semi-classic michael/quincy sound... as does 'heaven can wait'... michael never wanted to maintain that sound though. people ask why he never stayed with quincy, but i don't think he should have. from a marketing perspective, his music never would have sold. michael was about mystery. so when 'bad' came out and he looked TOTALLY different than he did even in 'captain eo' but ESPECIALLY thriller, people talked. and the record was also digitally recorded... it sounded nothing like thriller. the linn drum machine was very much there, but not as prominent (in terms of sound) on thriller. chancler had a great. steady sound. 'bad' was all about the drum programming. and he knew how different it all was. but he did it anyway. it sounds more like a michael production than a quincy one. even though jerry hey is still involved, so many of the horn chartings (but definitely not all) are pretty much synthesized at this point. despite this, there's a very warm feeling to the album. on dangerous, i believe everything is done through the keys, with brad buxer, etc.

the arrangement on 'bad' is unerrated. but i digress.

again, the consumer is selfish; they want to hear what they want to hear. people wanna hear michael repeat off the wall and thriller 20,000 times. invincible is a great album.

I like OTW and Thriller, but loooove Bad and Dangerous, especially Bad start to finish, and Dangerous for some of his most creative career moments.

I hear more Michael in Destiny and Triumph than the majority of OTW, but I LOOOOVE the singles, and songs like Rock With You and She's Out of My Life, though I have always loved them, sound so emotional and pure now and make me emotional and are good to sing along to.

have you seen the mexico performance in '75? check that out, especially when they do 'forever came today'... you hear a lot of the vocal developments of his adult self. he was doin' his THANG there!!!

i've never been too big on 'dirty diana' at all- that's the one song i skip on the album. and as much as i love 'the way you make me feel' i can't listen to the song anymore. i never saw the video when it was released (i didn't have MTV or anything), so when i saw it years later it ruined everything for me, because it made me think of a gang rape fantasy video. a lot of people think the video is great, but i almost had nightmares i think, after watching it. so now i can't even listen to the song. the rest of the album i think is great!

i totally agree with you in terms of 'hearing more of michael in destiny...' to me, destiny was the beginning of his artistic moment of truth. he was speaking a lot about his life there. he was crying out for help, but people really weren't trying to hear him. i think it's comperable to HIStory, in terms of what he was saying about his life. 'she's out of my life'... i first saw the video when i was a little kid, back in 1980. i never saw the video again until 2007. my love and concern for michael instantly grew. i just saw a sad individual and not a performer, in ways i never saw when i was a child.
