Should Chaka Khan sign with a major record company?

In 2001,I saw Chaka Khan in concert with a re-formed Rufus and she mentioned that there would soon be a new reunion album.I had also heard that she would do a rock album,as well as a jazz album, but these projects never seem to get off the ground.

Chaka has her own record label (Earth Song),but I guess it's not that easy being an "independent" artist after all.Teena Marie tried it for awhile, but now she has gone back to a major record label (Cash Money Records).Perhaps Chaka should follow suit?

The reason I say this is because I love Chaka, and I want some new music from her, goddammit! smile

Chaka has already done a jazz album that got totally overlooked in 1982.. check out my post on a thread called Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan back in 8/05/2002...

Chaka consider herself to be a great jazz vocalist as well. How many of you know that in 1982 she RELEASED a jazz album under the name ECHOES OF AN ERA which was a jazz group consisting of Chaka, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and Chick Corea". This was a very good album with Chaka breathing new life into some jazz standards. The name of the album was called ECHOES OF AN ERA.

One reason the album didn't get more attention than it did is because, Chaka and the other musicians wanted to use the name Echoes Of An Era for the album. Arguably, if the name Chaka Khan would have been used on the album(because essentially that's what it was... a Chaka Khan jazz project wit her and some prominent jazz musicians)then the album would have probably gotten more attention. I listed this album in the "Favorite Jazz Album" thread last week as one of my favorite 25 jazz recordings. It's a superior album. Look for it at a used record store (as the album is out of print).

WHAT CHA GONNA DO FOR ME??? and ECHOES OF AN ERA are major Chaka Khan musical statements.

Oh yes,Chaka has done many jazz recordings throughout her career. Her 1981 album 'What Cha Gonna Do For Me" features several jazz tracks on Side 2,and even back then, there was alot of talk about her moving into the jazz field. It's clearly something she wants to do and that's why I think she should consider signing with a major record label. To get this music out there!

The jazz standard "Night In Tunisia" reworked by Chaka is awesome on the What Cha Gonna Do For Me?. That song is one of her greatest achievements. Herbie Hancock laid down a fierce synth solo on that piece. I may play this track later on today. Great stuff!!!

Don't even get me started!!! Whatever it takes, she needs to release more music, especially non R & B stuff. The R&B stuff she could do in her sleep. I would love to hear both Jazz and Rock from her.

I have to look for that Echo album!!

She is one of my abolute all time favorite artists. That voice has the power of a runaway train, yet it's completely controlled. Sometimes you can tell she's not using all her power and even then she still blows the roof of the mutha!
