Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart collaboration in the works.... In the late Sixties, an unknown raspy voiced singer named Rod Stewart met guitar hero, ex-Yardbird lead guitarist Jeff Beck in an English pub. Beck invited Stewart to jam with him with the hopes that he had found the singer for his new band. This was 1967. The two would then go through a smorgasboard of drummers, bass players and a piano player (Nicky Hopkins), but for two years they were the main people in The Jeff Beck Group. The group made two albums: TRUTH and BECK-OLA. The group disbanded just days before they were to have been featured at the Woodstock Festival. The split was very contentious, and each went his seperate ways. Beck, was in a near fatal car accident just before he was to start a new group with the rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge, bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice. It had been his hope that Stewart would join with them. Stewart went on to start his solo career and then joined The Faces to take the place of Steve Marriott as their singer. Beck recuperated and went on to form a new Jeff Beck Group in lat 1970. In 1984, Beck and Stewart reunited for a remake of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" (and they made a music video for it as well). It would end up on Beck's FLASH album and be the highest charting US single of his solo career. The two along with their management met to discuss a tour, Beck signed on to be a special gues on Rod Stewart's tour in support of his '84 album CAMOUFLAGE, of which Beck guested on 3 songs, including the big hit single "Infatuation" (and he also appeared in the music video). The tour was for 76 dates - Beck in one of his fits of dissatisfaction, bolted after only 5 dates. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's induction ceremony in NY in 1994 was to have featured a reunion as the two performed "People Get Ready", but due to the earthquake in Los Angeles days before that affected Stewart's property, the performance did not occur - so instead Beck played the tune instrumentally. In 2004 the two were to have reunited again for Rod Stewart's ONE NIGHT ONLY dvd at London's Royal Albert Hall and do several tunes of the Jeff Beck Group, with ex- band member Ron Wood (now of The Rolling Stones) on bass guitar. After rehearsing at the RAH with Stewart and Wood, Beck phone Rod just before the show to say, he would have to pass on the performance. In 2009, at a Los Angeles concert tour date of Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart came on stagetand performed "People Get Ready" and "I Ain't Superstitious" to the approval of the roaring crowd. In the audience was Mick Jagger. Now after contant back and forth negotiations and a 41 year beef, the two met over Xmas in London and decided to have a go at it for some recordings. Major stumbling block has been in the creative/stylistic arena, Rod wants to do a blues record, and Jeff has progressed beyond that. Beck who will be performing for Barbara Streisand on Feb. 11th in LA and is up for 5 Grammys on Feb. 13th, will head to San Franciso to Narada Michael Walden territory and record new tracks with drummer Walden, bassist Rhonda Smith and keyboardist Jason Rebello. Stewart will add vocals later. Beck then heads out on tour with Imelda May and her band for 11 cities and 12 shows, and then after that he will resume his touring schedule with his band of Walden, Smith and Rebello from April thru July.
