Volume 4 of Hip-O Select's Smokey series is here...

The Solo Albums Volume 4: Love Breeze/Where There’s Smoke… (Motown/Hip-o Select, 2011)

The fourth volume in the successful series collates Smokey’s last two studio LPs of the 1970s: Love Breeze (1978) and Where There’s Smoke… (1979). The latter of the two was Robinson’s first Top 40 album since 1975′s A Quiet Storm, thanks largely to the delightful “Cruisin’,” which would be the singer’s highest-charting solo single at the time, peaking at No. 4. (It earned the adoration of a new generation in 2000, when it was covered by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow for the largely forgettable film Duets.)

A bonus track will also be included in the form of an instrumental version of “Get Ready,” a tune Smokey wrote for The Temptations in 1966. It appeared on the 12″ single of the song in 1979. (UPDATE: The Solo Albums Volume 5 is going to be Smokey's 1978 acclaimed double live LP, Smokin’.)

Hey my friend

I was nervous they were going to skip the double live album. I'm pretty stoked to hear that is going to be released as well. I sure do hope it has bonus tracks. How did you find out that is scheduled to be rereleased next? I haven't seen any notes on that one coming next.

Regarding volume 4, while it's certainly better than volume 3, it really isn't all that much so IMO. Daylight and Darkness is a strong track and of course Cruisin is a monster song, but the two albums aren't actually filled with much strong material overall.

And the choice of bonus track being a 12 inch version of a song that was a six minute nightmare to begin with.... ouch...... smile

Regarding Smokin' being reissued next, I got the info from a person who knows Harry Weigner personally and it's legit too. I don't know if its gonna be an individual release or another 2 on 1 release, but I'm excited.

Alright I'll keep you posted man! I also heard from this person that they are in the process of completing a deluxe reissue of Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man soundtrack, complete with original packaging and lots of bonus material. No lies, sir! I will ask about J-5 and James for you.

silverchild, any info on future Rick James reissues would be great! Surely Come Get It!, Bustin' Out Of L 7, Throwin' Down, Cold Blooded and Glow are on the way?

Oh, and if I may push my luck is there any chance of a fourth Chuck Berry box set collecting his Mercury albums circa 1967-1969?

I second LittleBlueCorvette regarding James Brown. A series of box sets that collect everything would be ideal.

Thank you for the information. I just went to my two record set of Smokin and added up the times. Looks like it's about 78/79 minutes, so I seriously doubt we will be getting any bonus tracks on a second disc. That was the one really frustrating thing about the Miracles LIve Collection they put out a few years back. They had plenty of space for bonus tracks AND still faded out songs. (Maybe they couldn't find the source tapes).

Don't want to be presumptious about you mining your friend for info, but I'd also be very curious about whether or not they intend on releasing the rest of the Smokey and the Miracles albums.

There are albums like Pocketful of Miracles and One Dozen Roses that REALLY need to be on CD. Not to mention there must be dozens of unreleased tracks in the vault. Cellarful of Motown puts out a new Smokey/Miracles tune on each version of their double discs.

Either way, thanks again for the heads up.

Please ask about the Tito solo material, or Jermaine's Philly songs. I'd also be interested in the 1st Little Stevie Wonder album. I know it's available in Japan, but it's out of print in the US. Well most of Stevie's 60's stuff is out of print. Thanks.

Yeah Trouble Man is definitely coming out sometime this year (possibly this summer, as this person who works closely to Harry has stated to me). Let's keep our fingers crossed! Harry and others have been trying to go back to the film itself and get some things together to make it complete as possible. It's just been a hard and tedious process as there is so much he was doing during the making of this score and Let's Get It On.

There are some more J5 releases on the way also, with rarities (let's just call it a sequel to The Unreleased Masters that was released in 2009).

The second installment of the 70's Supremes box set is still in production, as well as a possible James Brown collection (not a singles collection!)

Yeah... it's almost unbelievable how much stuff Marvin was even making during that time...

Hmm, now I am intrigued. I'm loving those double disc singles collections but I'd definitely like to hear something that digs a bit deeper.
