I didn't know Madonna was considered beautiful to be honest. I haven't heard too many people refer to her as such. Sexy yes, but not beautiful. I mean she's attractive and photographs well, but she doesn't have "classic" good looks. Well at least not to me. I think what she does have is sex appeal and a "bad girl" image and that definitely brought her a lot of attention. She used sex to market herself, sex is a big part of her image so Madonna's image has definitely played some part in her success and fame.

However, if Madonna's music wasn't good and she wasn't a great live performer, she wouldn't have lasted this long. Her talent and intelligence is the main reason why she was so so successful.

I believe Madonna has been such a success because she knew how to market herself and her music is great as well.

Ciccone was personally never attractive to me to begin with but I'll go along and say no.

ummm she only look half way decent during her express yourself/vogue period.

She's had some great photographs taken of her, but I wouldn't consider her a beautiful woman.

However, I do remember there being a lot of "Madonna is the most beautiful woman in the world" type of comments being made around in the 80s / early-90s. During that period people just used to think the biggest stars were the most "talented" or the best at what they did (i.e. "Michael Jackson is the best dancer in the world", "Slash is the best guitarist in the world"). Apparently, the biggest female pop star was also the "most beautiful" in some people's minds. Perhaps the beauty standards in the 1980s were a bit different as well - it wasn't so much about your features, but rather, what you did with them. Hell, in some cases you just had to have big hair and a lot of badly applied make up to be considered attractive.

I actually did not think she was beautiful, more sexy. Looking back, I think she was definintly pretty, but her teeth & eyebrows are a little off.

I never quite knew why she was popular back then, but I will say that many prettier women have come and gone and Madonna is still around.

I don't think she would be as big if she was ugly. If she was, all of the little girls would not have wanted to look like her and be her. And all of the guys would not have wanted to be with her and sleep with her...

She's also considered to be the biggest female sex symbol of all-time in MUSIC (by far) - if she was ugly I don't think people would think of her in that way.

She's one of the biggest sex symbols in history (right up there with Marilyn and Elvis, etc.)

I'm confused. I always thought Madonna was drop dead gorgeous in the 80's and cool as all hell. She was the bomb. I doubt she would have been the mega star without her good looks. I believe she was the full package!

I think Ms. Ciccone mastered the art of controversy and sex appeal.

Some looks have worked better than others, but I think Madonna has looked great throughout her career. And, yes, it has been a big part of her success, in my estimation.

I never really considered her to be beautiful. Even when she first came out, I thought she was pretty; sexy even, but never beautiful. After she did "Ray of Light," "Music" and "American Life," I then saw her in a different light. She's so adroit at marketing herself and in such great control of her image, that the beauty lies in THAT. She's strong, self-assured and knows EXACTLY what she's doing and where she's heading. I salute her for having endured all these years in such a filthy business.

However, the answer is no because female celebs are generally held to a different standard, regardless of talent.

I'm a big Madonna fan. I don't think she's ugly, but I don't think she's the most perfect beautiful person either. I think that's why she's relatable to a lot of her female fans. She's attractive but not perfect in her looks. For her looks are part of who she is, but not all she is.

Looks are not that important for popularity, unless you're trying to reach a Tiger Beat audience. This guy has done pretty well for himself.

She has always been hot/sexually attractive, but come on, so many celebs who have used their looks and sex appeal to sell records (Jennifer Lopez, Danity Kane) or NOT sell records (Tila Tequila, Paris Hilton, Heidi Montag)...where are they today?

She's just pretty/good-looking (face wise) enough to be a hit, but not so drop dead gorgeous naturally (Catherine Zeta or Cindy Crawford or Chilli or Rihanna she ain't) that she's known JUST for being hot. But her body has always been so fuckable that it works in her favor ultimately.
