I've been thinking about this for a while now. She's a so-so singer, she doesn't write her own material, has no stage presence/charisma, no personality, she can't dance, and I believe she plays no instruments.

So what's the deal with her having 9 (Yes 9) #1 singles at the age of 22? More than Beyonce, Britney, Pink, Gaga, etc and only a couple away from 40+ artists like Janet, Madonna, and Whitney.

What makes her have the ability to not struggle like Ciara?

Why do people think she's groundbreaking? Is it the edginess? Was it the haircut? When Chris made her eat the cake? (But she was already tearin up the charts before that though)

Very good songwriters and good marketing, I believe it's beauty, style and catchy hooks too...I know a lot of people say she can't sing, but when she uses her voice well she can. She looks good onstage, but I also agree she has no soul on it.

Despite the fact that her singing vocals are below average, Rihanna is an excellent recording studio artist, which is someone that fits perfectly in a producer-driven environment.

By saying "studio artist", I mean she is the kind of artist that can co-exist with the best of studio technology (especially Autotunes) need in her music to help her get by very well. It also helps that most of her greatest hits are uptempo and more in common with the genre of dance-pop & club dance than it does with hip-hop/r&b (nothing counting the midtempo tracks or slow ballads of course).

I think it's simply the catchy song's and her producers, honestly if you have a catchy song you can have a hit sadly...

Another thing to take into account is Rihanna is in it to win it with the big dog's like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj. So i think that helps as well that she in deep with those people

What makes Rihanna so special? The recording industry that promotes her and makes money off of her in return. If the recording industry wanted to promote a bag of rocks, that bag of rocks would be a very special bag of rocks with hits galore.

1) She is sexy.

2) She's got a bunch of eggheads who write catchy tunes for her and produce them in a way so they sound contemporary.

I wouldn't say she has no personality at all. I've seen her on all the chat shows when she comes over here and she's always been utterly charming and fun, which is more than I can say for some stars of her stature and larger.

I would not say that .... she has a more natural style ..... I like Beyonce but she more a performance artist she has to work at "IT".... I don't think Rihanna over styles her stage act or music .... so it sounds like it from her even if we know people are writing for her..

I saw her on a talk show and the only thing I don't like was the fact that she talked with no Bahamian accent, and I've heard it before. She was hiding her accent.

She does not hide it in Europe...well the UK interviews ....because North Americans don't like non-US centric artist she plays up her US accent....

Her record company have told her to do it, so people can understand her!
