A Disco One Night Stand: "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman
Awww hell now, it's Friday night and I'm sittin' up here drinkin' and it's cold outside. The colder it gets, the hotter I get. I just love the winter time honey. This is the kind of jam that you take a stranger home, have him, and then send him back to his wife, girlfriend, or whoever and let him be their problem from now on.
Give it up dammitt! . . . [Edited 1/29/11 7:13am] Andy is a four letter word.

If the Bee Gees had let other people do the songs they wrote on "Saturday Night Fever", it still would've been a classic. It still amazes me that from the time they recorded their first album in England to the last album they did together, they wrote all their own songs. And were able to write some incredible songs for other people.
You also have to wonder if they didn't focus on making the soundtrack and had finished that album and made it a single album, it might have rivalled "Thriller" for best selling album of all time.
But she did a better job on that song than the Bee Gees did.

Yvonne's version is THE better version, no doubt.
But The Bee Gees's original makes me laugh when Barry Gibbs hits the vocal high notes at the end of the song!

Many of the songs from the soundtrack were originally from other albums, they weren't specifically recorded for it. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
