Well, I'd love to watch Michael Henderson and Howard Hewitt suck each others dicks..... lol

But no, I see all this collaborating as one of the things that eventually ruined music and made it all sound alike. The Barkays had their own producer, Allen Jones, who pretty much have them their own sound. He also produced other lesser known groups like Ebonee Webb and Kwick and that was fine. The Solar Records artists had producers that gave them their own sound. Rick James and Prince both had their own sound and acts that had their own sound. Same with George Clinton, Parliament/Funkadelic, etc. Everyone either had their own sound themselves or were part of a set of groups that had their own sound.

When folks started deciding they wanted particular outside producers, everything started sounding alike. In the early 1980s, it was great when Nile Rodgers produced Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder produced Jermaine Jackson because it wasn't hugely widespread. But in the late 1980s, everybody wanted either Jam/Lewis or LA/Babyface to produce them. They did a lot of great stuff but most of the good stuff that was on the radio at that time was starting to sound alike and they were wearing the sound out. When the 1990s came along, more and more people wanted someone established to come in and produce them and everything really started sounding alike but unlike the 1980s, when they wore a sound out in the 1990s, they didn't let it go. They just continued wearing it out.

Wow, bringing Michael Henderson up, that's like tying a bow on 1980 and presenting it as a gift to someone. A beautiful and hairy bow. I was looking for some information on him and found this great quote on Wikipedia.

Before working with Miles Davis, Henderson had been touring with Stevie Wonder, whom he met at the Regal Theater in Chicago while warming up for a gig. Davis saw the young Henderson performing at the Copacabana in New York City in early 1970 and reportedly said to Wonder simply "I'm takin' your bass player."

Oh he is very talented....in more ways than one. lol

I take it you've never seen The Wiz or bought its soundtrack.

I was disappointed with Donna's duet with Barbara Streisand.I think Diana would have been a better duet partner.

It's possible Fred and Michael did some dancing in the 70s that the family prob. has footage of.

When it comes to Motown, Berry still has tons of unreleased stuff.

I don't know if he ever did an "all star" session with Diana, Michael, Smokey, Stevie and Marvin prior to the move to LA. I think all of them moved out there anyway.

I remember thinking initially that it was an odd match-up, but over the years it's sounded right to me. Diana & Donna would have been interesting, if you could have gotten them in the same room back then, lol.

I'm surprised no one said these two yet:

does the fact that they were going to do 'bad' together count? but prince said no... and a lot of the stuff from the 'dangerous' sessions is obviously influenced by prince...

Barbra Streisand is great, but her vocals don't really 'fit' on a disco song lol She sounds awkward on that song and even she thought so too.During a break in the recording of "Enough Is Enough",she frantically called her manager, whining that "disco ain't my thing....Donna is singing better than me",lol.

I think a Donna/Diana duet would have been much more interesting, especially since the two of them were often compared to each other back then.

Herbie played on Jermaine Jackson's album called Jermaine (1980).

I've always thought a piano and vocal collaboration between Leon Russell and Dr. John would be the shiznit. They are both mega-talented keyboard players with that swampy gospel flavored sound and their voices are so distinctive.

Instead we got Leon and Elton's duets album that's gotten great reviews but I'm just not feelin' it.

Check these voices and styles:

You were disappointed in No More Tears? I don't really understand that statement, even without qualifiers. They released 3 to 4 versions of that song - 1 for Ms. Streisand's fans, 1 for Ms. Summer' fans, and at least one for the label. Oddly, Ms. Streisand's version stands head and shoulders above the others for me. And all of them stand head and shoulders above disappointment.

There were several songs on Ms. Streisand's amazing album that year (WET!!!) where Ms. Ross would have been an incredibly perfect fit. Just not NMT. Ms Ross is a great and smart singer with a lovely tone. Maybe Rain or Shine would have worked for those two.
