Nice! And really timely for me!

I admitted to Harlepolis a few weeks ago that I had next to no Parliament-Funkadelic in my libary. redface She was nice to me, but I was so embarrassed that I've since acquired their entire catalog and have been plumbing it. I've always dug the hits I knew of theirs, but I cannot believe I've slept on how incredibly talented and visionary those brothers are!! faint It's like I've discovered a new planet!

I went crazy and got everything recorded under the Parliament or Funkadelic banners. I haven't yet gotten into satellite groups or the various solo projects of band members, etc. I knew a lot of the material, but there is some serious treasure in their more unsung songs.

nod What an understatement - You said a mouthful, lol.

The bulk of what made P-Funk truly unique rarely ever made it on the radio or on any "Greatest Hits" collection. One of the reasons Parliament/Funkadelic has such a strong fan base is that WE (Old School Funkateers) supported them through word of mouth and by playing their records in private and at neighborhood House Parties.

See?!? THAT's what I'm talkin' 'bout. I don't believe I've EVER heard "Mug Push" on the radio. Yet, as I read your comment, I can hear it playing in my head (without having to actually play the song). THAT's 500,000 kilowatts of P-Funk Power!

headbang (...you know how we do...)

You know, after watching that documentary, I realized how badly we miss a Pedro bell coffee table book. I would love to see that, a coffee table of his illustrated work, outtakes, stuff that weren't meant to be put in record sleeves and description on each item he worked on.

That would've been a HELLUVA present.

I was never exposed to the P-Funk empire until I became an orger myself, thats makes two of us really.

And George's music will be nipped/tucked and closely observed & studied in many many many decades to come simply because its outrageously rich. Dare I say, he's the Duke Ellington of funk music, in the sense that every musician in his empire had a voice, a personality and an individual place in George's music.

True. This docu got me thinkin about this "empire". It's.....a.....VERY large bunch of talented folks. I mean...the WHOLE "mob"? Artists & ALL? What.... a hundred people? I dunno. It's HUGE...let alone the sheer volume of music.

For a newb, must be daunting (but FUNNNNNN...lol) to approach this.

I was wondering along the same lines earlier: What group, or recording artist, today has a large & loyal fan base, a look & sound all their own, sells a lot of records which cover a variety of genres, sells-out concert venues with elaborate "over-the-top" stage productions, sets trends, without the aid of much radio airplay or television exposure?

I think it might be a while before we see anything like the Parliament/Funkadelic phenomenon ever again.

Also you have to think about it for a MINUTE, George Clinton was really the ONLY artist who was ever to do that and he had a group of musicians that were a meshing of R&B, jazz, gospel, rock, metal, soul, funk, etc., and put it all together like a melting pot, bring in the lyrics, the philosophies and the characters and the artwork and it's something that was rare THEN and rare NOW.

nod He really created an entire universe in which we could immerse ourselves. I took to heart my promise to "Funk the whole Funk, and nothing but The Funk", and regularly took/take advantage of my chance to dance my way out of my constrictions.

Yeah, GC really got into my head, lol (...and I'm glad he did).

Great Doc, btw. cool

In that age old question, "if you can have only one groups catalog to enjoy,on a desert island, who would it be?"

That's so easy for me....Parliament/Funkadelic! Even without all the side projects! But I think it's fair to include them considering most were still the same folks playing on each others albums.

The mixing of so many different musical styles is just sick, right? Once you get into it, it truly becomes a part of you. Forever. wink

Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

There u go nod

Also, after reading Ricky Vincent's book "Funk: The Music, The People & The Rhythm of The One" and watching THAT documentary. I realized how crucial Neil Bogart was to the P-Funk legacy(in fact, all of the acts in Casablanca records).

Its a rarity for a record executive to be this courageous and be 100% behind his acts, no matter how outrageous their ideas seem to be. I can't help but to wonder how history would take its course had George been at the care of somebody else.
