Who had the better debut album? D'Angelo or Maxwell?

I will have to go with D'Angelo. He basically kicked off neo soul for me and even though his output has been sporadic in between ho strolling and crack pipes and whatnot, ithink he has been more consistent in terms of material.

Maxwell, mainly because of Leon Ware. And I prefer D'Angelo as an artist.

Did Leon write or produce or both?

I would have to go with Maxwell as well.

I have to give it to Maxwell. "Urban Hang Suite" was a pleasant surprise that took me to another place as a music listener at that time.

I gotta give it to Maxwell. To me, it's more of an artistic statement that R&B needed at that time and it flowed better in my opinion than D'Angelo's. Now if this was a conversation about sophomore albums, that would be interesting. lol

Definitely Maxwell. I wasn't that taken by D'Angelo. His sound was too smokey and moody. Maxwell's was a lot more relaxed and comforting on the ear.

Brown Sugar is D's best album, but I can't say it's better than UHS.

Really? Why did I think Stewart Mathewman produced his debut?

Maxwell was everywhere in '09 and last year. His album BLACKSummer'sNight did really well. SUMMER'S is out this year or next, I think.

It's D'Angelo we're all waiting on.

For the original question, as good as Brown Sugar is, Urban Hang Suite I find better overall.

Summers' will be out soon, 2011. Supposedly D'angelo will drop "James River" this year too.

D'Angelo by a million miles. Urban Hang Suite is a good album, but I've always found it a little overrated. I can't think of one song on it I like as well as at least 3/4 of Brown Sugar.

Me neither. I need to see a surprise appearance from him somewhere in order for me to believe something's coming out. Quite like Maxwell's appearance on the BET awards in '08, and then in '09 he drops a great album. D' been on the same bullcrap.

Well, D'Angelo does sing on Mark Ronson's latest album. The track is "Glass Mountain Trust".

I guess most black people wouldn't know about that though.cool

I heard the track and I dug it. But everybody else wasn't feeling it for some reason. I loved when he was featured on Q-Tip and Common's recent albums.

Well years of hard living can cause a change! lol But it was still listenable and he's had a pretty good collaboration record overall.
