I knew for awhile that Rihanna was channelling her I Get Lonely look

How are people taking her red hair? People were weird about Janet when she did it, though I loved it.

I like it, personally. It suits her skin tone and doesn't look as cartoonish as it could.

S & M is an interesting single choice, pretty good track, typical, sexual innuendo lyrics kind of like the unreleased "Sexuality", but im sure the video will get alot of attention as will the "Fly" video which she just shot also with Nicki Minaj

That song is very catchy though dirty, it stood out to me right away when I sampled the album

Rihanna's red hair always looked cartoonish to me, up until very recently.

The S&M song is ridiculous lol. I'm a liberal guy, but I find it a little irresponsible that she puts songs like this and "Rude Boy" out as singles when there's masses of 10 year old girls etc walking around with their ipods singing her songs.

I would buy that if MTV wasnt airing even (much younger) child porn 24/7 with this new show skins, so im not going to draw the line because Rihanna is now an adult and parents now actually have to be PARENTS and not their childs friends and not let them dress or emulate this stuff. Rihanna is old enough to do this, if mtv can air that shit and BS like my sweet 16 show with parents whoring their kids out for a prom, then rihanna can sing about whips and chains, she is the least of the problem.

thing is though you can thank the 2 generations before her for opening this all up, thank Madonna janet and others for "going there" and then Xtina and others continuing it and of course the guys shouldnt get off light either i mean every RB singer from Usher to Jaheim was bedding some chick in their videos when they were starting out, so all equally as guilty

I just think Rihanna ought to realize that maybe pushing a song like "S&M" might not be the best idea given that she has a young fanbase and it's not really appropriate for them to be going around singing about whips and chains. Even though they have no understanding of the meaning, it's still not exactly subtle.

yeah I'm aware that my favourite artists like madonna, janet etc. paved the way and I know that because of my age and seeing that, no one else will do it quite the same

don't get me wrong, I do like a lot of rihanna's songs and think she has great style, but the red hair has just been hit and miss for her, sometimes it suits her, and other times it really doesn't

but that is the industry, it pushes the young, its been that way for the last almost 15 years now, ever since it was realized that the kids like Britney and Backstreet sold millions and millions back then. But its all relevant of the time, I dont feel that a 9 year old should even be listening to Lady GaGa, but thats me and why i wouldnt have kids and that responsibilty, because parents i feel, feel pressue to be "cool" like other kids parents and since "joeys mom" lets him listen to Rap or Lady GaGa then i should let my kid listen or they are going to get teased at school etc...and then parents do want that added pressure. So to me i dont think the artists have to answer to anyone, because its so subjective and in alot of cases very sexist the way a female has to watch what she does and males dont.

For Rihanna and using her as an example, she is at the point where it has to break, every artist who comes out when they are a teen has to grow up and let that audience go, this happens to all of them, remember when Britney did the Britney album and the video for "Stronger" came out with her in the tight black outfit, she got hit for that sudden "change" and then of course the "Toxic" video etc...so to me it happens to all of them, there has to be a point when THEY the artist are grown they naturally think different things, i mean we cant expect Rihanna to keep singing cute little POP songs forever, to me, i thought day one her outfits and things were surpisingly small, so im not shocked at this point with her, and i dont think anyone will be.

I have to disagree on this one. Rihanna is an artist, and a grown woman, and, while young girls do look up to her and love her music, she has to do what she feels is right for her. Being a role model is great, but she can't stay boxed in forever. She can't pander to the pre-teen set forever, particularly if she wants to keep growing as an artist and a performer. No 9-year old should be jamming to "S&M", anyway. It's a parent's responsibilty to monitor what his or her child listens to, watches, etc. Besides, she's not exactly the first artist with a large young fanbase to venture into adult-themed songs (Britney, Christina, Miley, Backstreet, N'SYNC, Justin, etc.)

Yeah maybe that's the case, but I generally detected a bit more subtlety in the past with the likes of Britney, she never had choruses that blatantly said things like "Come on rude boy get it up, are you big enough". I might be reading too much into this one but for me it's also a case of the songwriting just not being strong in terms of double entendres and subtlety which made things less obvious in the past perhaps.

^ the way it's styled right there is fantastic. She look neat and well groomed and the color compliments her tone and hazel green eyes.

I usually agree with what you have to say but an artist can sing about what they want. Prince has written and sung much more explicit material and I've seen members on here say they got 'into him' at ages 10 etc.. I'd understand if Rihanna went on The Muppets and started singing explicit songs lol then you have a point.

It's like saying not to sell alcohol at all because underage kids will drink it.

The American pop music market is designed to corrupt the youth. Its a large tool for mass subliminal suggestions, which is why so many singers and rappers shout brand names in their songs. pretty much the entire market is selling sex to teenaged girls these days. We're out of the violent 90s, so sex is what's left. Well, sex and drugs. Rihanna doesn't write. The words coming out of her mouth are not hers. They are probably that of some porn-addicted grown ass man who has gone so far into their own fetishized reality that they don't think of what is and isn't acceptable OR the song was probably written for another artist (most likely) who caters to a more adult crowd and somebody at the company heard it and decided it was time to make the "good girl gone bad" live up to her moniker. Either way, its no surprise. The youth of today are being attacked from all sides; bombarded with titilation from every direction by corporate fucks who want to get a generation into their mindset so they can sell them shit. Nothing in the pop market is jst about music anymore. Its all "building a brand" bullshit. Pop music is just a tool nowadays.
