PJ Harvey: New Studio Album, Let England Shake

November 24, 2010

According to her website, PJ Harvey will be releasing her eight studio album, Let England Shake on February 14, via Island.

Recorded with long time collaborators Mick Harvey of The Bad Seeds and John Parrish with producer Flood, the process saw the team working in old church in Dorset, England.

Her first album since 2007′s White Chalk, Let England Shake is sure to be one of the highlights of 2011, as the British songstress has long displayed a sense of craft an ability that most of today’s artists would kill to equal.

Thanks for the news. I used to really like her back in the 90's and also I loved Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. Her last couple of releases have been too avant garde for me. I know she likes to be creative and change, but I want some more accessible things.

I hope this is a return to her more guitar based music. Not a fan of the keyboard stuff on White Chalk.

Great news, i'm a big fan, been into her from her first album, seen her 11 times live.

A new album is overdue from her.

Look forward to it.

Nice. PJ hasn't released a bad album yet. Every one I think is at least very good. I'll be looking forward to this.

I hope she's done with that "piano from the crypt" sound.

I like my PJ with a little more fiyah.

Love that! A perfect way to describe White Chalk! I just couldn't get into that album at all. I like PJ Harvey a lot, but she is a total critics' darling. Music critics praise her no matter what she does even if it's not really that good. She's talented but not every thing she does is a work of genius. Some is great, some isn't.

I hope that she doesn't go overboard being weird this time, but get back to the basics of guitar based rock/blues songs.

Even Uh Huh Her?

She's my favorite female artist of the nineties, but I can't muster much enthusiasm for her work of the last decade.

Totally agree. PJ was the nineties, but recently she has gone a little too avant garde and inaccesible for me.

She's great, but it annoys me that she tries to not be famous and accessable. She had a serious taste of it at one time and has been running away from it ever since.

i love that album smile "when under ether" is one of my favorit songs by her nod

but judging from the title of the new album, it's bound to be harder and faster

than "white chalk".

i mean, she wouldn't name it "let england shake" if it were a piano based slow

burning album. i'm expecting lots of screaming and loud guitar orgasms.

yay!

I wouldn't say that "she tries to not be famous"; I'd say that she's employing a timed-tested strategy for career longevity. As for accessibility, my response would depend on whether you mean in the musical sense or in the accessible-to-the-media-and-public sense.

I'm not sure about that. She's not a total recluse. She does do interviews to promote her records and performs on tv shows like Jay Leno and David Letterman. She doesn't totally hide from the media, but she does refuse to talk about her personal life and wants to just talk about her music and art which I find very admirable.

That was...weird. I love the shot of the show hosts just sitting there watching quietly.

I mean, it's not sleepy piano music - but, um...well. Gonna have to wait for the studio version on that one.

Dig up Dry, Rid of Me, 2 Bring you My Love, Dance Hall, Stories. There is enough of that to go around and you can't tell me you're tired of any o that. although I won't even lie and say I couldn't go for some rockin stuff too lol

Courtney's still knockin' about. Nobody's Daughter was a fine return imo.

Am I the only one who prefers 4-Track Demos over Rid of Me? Albini ruined Rid of Me with his quiet-loud production, turning up the volume to hear Polly's distant verse vocals is to risk complaints from the neighbours when the chorus hits. She was probably disappointed herself because the official release of the Demos came after.

I was strictly referring to her career arc from the beginning through To Bring You My Love, as well as how she's handled her career (and artistic choices) since that album was released. Her personal life, or that of any other artist, holds no interest for me.

I miss the female rock chicks too! Nobody's Daughter had its moments but it was nowhere close to Live Through This and Celebrity Skin. Plus, Courntey's voice is so trashed now. There have been some rumors that Garbage is coming back, but nothing definite. I love Shirley!

But if there was a new female artist that came out with great rock songs, it would be huge because there's a big gap in the market there. I like some dance music, but I'm tired of all the electronics that totally dominate the charts now. We need a balance between live instruments/rock with all the dance electronics.
