Honestly, celebrities are presented to the public in so much glam that we forget that these are just ordinary people. It's how they're polished that makes them "beautiful" Most singers these days (and in the past) are plain looking folks... but they're styled and dazzled into goddesses. Dip me in some shine and I'd be a glamorous beauty too

I'm a big Madonna fan. I don't think she's ugly, but I don't think she's the most perfect beautiful person either. I think that's why she's relatable to a lot of her female fans. She's attractive but not perfect in her looks. For her looks are part of who she is, but not all she is.
Oh, you think if she was the beauty queen type that most women would probably be threatened by her and not want to be her fan? (they might not take her seriously?)
I do wonder though if there are some women out there who are envious of her appearance...anyone?
Definitely not. I don't envy anything about any female celebrity, however there are things that I admire (Janet's abs, Shakira's dancing, etc.)

So true. All one has to do is look at one of those sites that show celebs without makeup.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
No...if she was ugly. However if she had the talent of Streisand it might be overlooked if she were. I don't think Babs is ugly either...just uncoventional looking for a star of such magnitude.
Madonna started as an artist's model and she had a certain kind of Italian painting kind of beauty, but in moderns terms she was cute at best. She's more of an average women who uses various looks to underline her points. This has probably worked best for her than true beauty because it's far more interesting IMHO.
Very few female artists have gotten away w/ being "ugly" per se, but only few have been considered beautiful. Diana Ross, Stevie Nicks, Whitney Houston, and Joni Mitchell are the only few that I can think of that had huge longevitity.
Besides he's a MAN...the comparison doesn't really work well IMHO.
How about Bette then? She's not a man.
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

OK Bette (who tends to be rated talentwise w/ Streisand)..and I'll give you Patti Smith too (who is thought to look like Keef ) but these are hardly the rule. Both women are thought exceptional talents and not necessarily "pop" in the way of Madonna.
MEMO: Janis Joplin, Wendy O. Williams, & Nina Hagen are THE only ugly women that ever had a music career.
Nah...there was also Mama Cass Elliot! Believe it or not, she was actually thought to be quite hot by some, Janis as well. Janis has a sexiness and lots of guys were hot for her, including her fellow rock stars. Same is true for Patti Smith
I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
I always thought Madonna was hot, (but I liked Michelle Pfeiffer & Sharon Stone as well)...but I guess I'm just attracted to rebellious women a.k.a. bad girls. All three of 'em had that bold sexuality/sensuality thing going on with them.
She's got it all, & she takes no s***. But at the same time, she can be down to earth & she's always been about freedom of all kinds. Her personality & no holds barred attitude also adds to her attractiveness.
But to answer the original question...probably not. She definitely ain't ugly, though, especially in the '89-'96 era. Just my opinion...

1. Given that all 4 members of The Mamas & Papas were swingers with each other, I'm not surprise at all knowing Cass Elliot was consider a attractive BBW to some people.
2. Beside guys, a few women were hot for Janis as well. Janis was so on the down low back in the days.

Agree with all of that. I like all 3 women as well (Madonna, Sharon, Michelle.) I have always thought it was ironic that 3 of the hottest women of all-time (well in my opinion) are also all practically the same age (give or take a few months inbetween). I also think they all 3 resemble each other in a way too...
They also are good examples that not all blondes are dumb. All 3 seem intelligent (and strong.)
Some other ugly women who made it big in music......Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, among others..........
Lol none of these women are ugly especially not Aretha (when she was younger) or Mariah
I kknow right? Mariah was thought smokin' hot back in the day. Aretha then is NOT the Aretha now....sometimes I think people forget that.
Celine has a "look" true enough, but she's not so much a pop singer than AC nor was she ever. She is as Serge Gainsbourg (another ugly yet hottie) would have said "jolie laide". Gotta give her credit tho, she's quite elegant.

Janis wasn't particularly undercover about her bisexuality nor were many others of the rock crew.....back then music folks just didn't talk much about their sexuality as they do now. Folks just assumed (rightly in most cases) that they were TRYsexuals. Janis probably attracted both sexes pretty equally.
Funny thing about Cass, she was actually much more popular than Michelle Phillips even tho Michelle was the dime. That whole M&P crew was out there in every way.
All the women described so far in this thread have what the French call "chien" IMHO. It translates literally as "dog" but it doesn't mean that on this case. It's like they have a feral sexuality that shows in their faces...it's not about "pretty" or "ugly" more of having an IT quality that defies and is independent of conventional beauty.

^^^ Very interesting analysis and dissection of what otherwise was very one dimensional subject matter!

That is exactly what I meant. Janis was never caught on camera.
