Why isn't Erykah Badu a bigger star? Relative to what? Britney Spears or any of this 3 CD's and done "singers" the record companies hype. The sillness about "crossing over has always been ridiculous, what are Black artist crossing over too? When we created it in the first damn place. Please.

I didn't get into Miss Badu until 2005 and I've been addicted since. Her music is so peaceful, inspiring and different from the "norm." PLUS, sista girl can BLOW. I saw her live in Boston last June and u could have heard a pin drop in the theatre when she came out. There were fans of all ages, races and EVERY-1 knew the words to her songs. It was such a HAPPY night! I only wish that her New Amerykah sets were huge though; Part One especially, but Part Two is great too, even though it's lacking in the predecessor's socially targeted message. Maybe she scared people with it because, for HER, it was such a new kind of flavor. What I love most about Part One is how it is so angry and how she channels her anger into the music. Either way, sales, crossover (< I hate this word.) or otherwise, she's still representin' the kind of R&B that sadly has fallen to the wayside. I salute the excellence of her artistry and cannot get enough of "You Loving Me." I wish it was longer! In concert, she added in a whole new verse to it. LOVE me some Erykah! smile

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

I think she's sexy in this pic too, but then again, I think she's sexy in general. It's those green eyes and that peaceful vibe she exudes. She's very Goddess-like to me. smile

That´s your opinion but I find her quite sexy in this picture, and I usually don´t find her that sexy, really.

Thanks for the pic.

PS: Calling people "ugly" is a bit harsh, IMO.

Why Erykah is NOT a bigger (pop) star?:

A. Unlike Beyonce, Erykah did NOT pass the BPB (Brown Paper Bag) test.

B. Unlike Nicki Minaj, Erykah is happy with the body she was born with and is NOT trying to get implants.

C. Unlike Whitney Houston, Erykah does NOT need or want any help from Clive Davis.

D. Unlike Rhianna, Erykah is NOT a puppet for male producers OR beatmakers.

E. All of the above.

F. Because Erykah directs and produces many of her videos and stage shows and writes or co-writes many of her songs unlike most pop sluts and rimmed R&B tarts thus not falling prey to the male dominated music industry/average horny producer.

G. Because she is content with the level of stardom she has achieved.

plus she's not fuckin' rappers and producers for tracks.

Especially since her cooch is like a magnet for rappers anyway lol

Maybe she's at the level of stardom which suits her personally. She has a devoted music following, she always has decent cd sales, and I've seen her perform on 3 separate continents for packed crowds of adoring fans, so she seems like she's doing just fine to me. shrug

I think there's but so far you can go in the neo/soul category. I actually thinks she's pretty succuessful actually . Her concerts sell pretty well.

[Edited 1/18/11 7:00am]

Wha the eff is 'Neo-Soul'. These generic categories are what helps to kill real music.

There is no new soul. Most of this shit nowadays is soul-less. Moving on...

Badu isn't bigger because she is eratic, like Ms. Lauryn Hill. Female singers with touched behaviour turn off the male dominated music business: i.e. Anita Baker, Mikki Howard, Lauryn Hill, india.Aire and Badu to name a few.

Their whims and tantrums and divatude, cute at first, soon become tired and a liability.

Only Babs, Aretha, Ross, Patty-Patty and a few others can get away with it.

Just saying...

Erykah Badu next to Jill Scott are still the top leading divas of the Neo Soul and basically just the top R&B artists of today

She was popular around 1997 she got a little bit of mainstream attention she was not Beyonce big but she was popular enough where you could see her music videos on MTV and she was making apperences on certain mainstream shows

She had a good following in 1997 but just like anything else the music started to change the Neo Soul era was in it's last leg the only hope left was Jill Scott in keeping the Neo Soul era in mainstream's eyes

Erykah Badu could not keep up even though she was talented the music industry became to involved in the flash, glitz and gimmicks more so then the talent

2000-2001 was the last years we saw R&B pure artists in mainstream scale after that R&B reselmbled pop music and they pushed the women with less talent but since they looked good the corporate world pushed them as being better then what they actually were

Because nowadays unless you strip yourself from ANY individuality and join the robotic "everybody sounds the same because they were produced by the same hottest producer" bandwagon, you will not see yourself on the cover of billboard magazine anytime soon. And beside, she's TOO MUCH for bland middle America.

Anyway, she looks like she's content with her status in the music industry and unlike MANY artists nowadays, it looks like she's really enjoying herself. Like deebee pointed out earlier, I'd be happy if she crosses over, but I'd be happier if she keeps maintaining her creative freedom/authority, this is what sets her apart from many of her peers and I don't want that to be robbed from her.

Yea, Neo Soul music isn't mainstream anymore like it once was in the 90's. I used to love Neo Soul, but lost interest in it along w/ R&B music (both suck.) Erykah Badu's first album did very well, but her later efforts not so much. Plus she changed up her look...she's more eccentric looking now and that doesn't appeal to the general public, esp. w/ her genre of music.

Totally agree. R&B and even most soul singers have to have this cookie cutter image and sound to be really big. Anything too artistic and creavtive is frowned on and thrown out. Its like a lot of top 40 pop it has to fit a certain mold that is safe. It can't make you think too much.
